No Limit Powersports Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Just put a new set of pistons and rings in and had it ported while it was apart. What break in procedure do you guys recommend? Quote
MotulMonsta Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 Fisrt step is to make shure the ports are smooth and free of burrs...did they hone it after the port job? Next step is to put raw premix oil and coat the cylinder walls then check for any hangups by turning the motor by hand. While your at it, check to make shure the pistons don't exceed the maximum TDC hight above the cylinders. After that's all done double check the ring gap then bolt the head on. Check to make shure the pistons won't hit the spark plug then mix yourself a nice tank of 16:1 gas..well only a gallon. Run that for 2 min or so with the choke on then kill the motor. Check for leaks and coolant flow. Then start it back up and idle it for another 5 min with the choke on making SHURE you don't overheat the motor. after you idle it for the five min or so, double check your oil and coolant levels, pull the plugs to make shure you not lean..you want to be SUPER rich like at the point of oil fouling when you break a motor in. After you've made shure everything is good, idle the bike around your yard with the choke on until you use up the remaining fuel. Next mix yourself up a nice 32:1 mix or whatever you normaly run and start it up..idle it for 2-3 min with the choke on and check the plugs making shure your not lean. Now run the 1 gallon of gas out by idling around your yard with the choke on..after that, mix up your fuel again and run it for 2 min..with the choke off making shure your not lean..then hammer down..well take it easy for a bit and gradualy work up to full throttle paying close attention to the motor and how it's behaving. troyminator Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 Just out of curiousity.... Why do you run with the choke on? T Quote
jrfastbanshee Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I was told to always run same mix ratio as you normally would! Running extra oil will cause a lean condition cuz it lowers the fuel/air mix. If you want to make richer you should go up a jet or two. Everyone you talk to will tell you something different though. I just do a couple heat cycles then be nice for the first few tanks. Quote
Lepew Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 A few heat cycles and take it easy the first hour you ride it. I'd go thru a doz. plugs running with the choke on. You just want the rings to seat right before you rip on it. I would error the jetting to the rich side til it was broke in because of the porting and run the same fuel mix. Quote
