cdcoxwell Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Just got my flywheel back from boonman lightening it. I also have a new statar from RickyStatar. According to Clymer and few responce from members in the forum, the old statar was shot. I installed both and still NO SPARK . I had the steelership chk the coil and they said it was working. According to Cly. my ignition and kill switch is working. I'm praying that the CDI box is not shot, so if there is anything that you guys think that I may have not done yet PLEASE let me know. My luck, I will buy a cdi box and the problem was fixed with a $20 part . FYI 87' Sat up for about a decade Nothing is frozen up It was running fine when parked Broken throttle cable was whe shee was parked After a yr of not riding b/c or throttle cable shee had no fire. frocashmoney24 Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 all i can think of is ur cdi, sorry bro Quote
cdcoxwell Posted April 19, 2004 Author Report Posted April 19, 2004 Is that not the biggest rip-off. Yamaha new what they were doing when they didn't make a tester for the cdi. I guess it can go bad over time just sitting there. Quote
Indubitably Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Is that not the biggest rip-off. Yamaha new what they were doing when they didn't make a tester for the cdi. I guess it can go bad over time just sitting there. The CDI does go out over time, when I rebuilt my 87 over the summer it was the last thing I had to replace. The SOB went out on the dyno Quote
cdcoxwell Posted April 20, 2004 Author Report Posted April 20, 2004 Is there an aftermarket cdi that is better. Or just try to find a stock on here or ebay . Quote
jeffro189 Posted April 20, 2004 Report Posted April 20, 2004 did you gap the pickup coil?? if it is too far away it may not spark. Quote
cdcoxwell Posted April 20, 2004 Author Report Posted April 20, 2004 I didn't measure b/c it about 1/8" from it. To be on the safe side I will. I was wondering if that played a role in spark other than timing being off. Thanks alot Quote
nate1999mxz600 Posted April 20, 2004 Report Posted April 20, 2004 i had the same prob as you. i converted my stock wiring harness into a race harnes without the key switch, tors and she sparked like a mofacky. but im guessing youll prob need a cdi. i talked to my neighbor and he said thats pretty common with the older machines.i have a spare cdi for my 87 if you want it? it works like new. MotulMonsta Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 (edited) There is a huge spark increase when you get rid of all the TOR's and light wires. I got my harness down to 3 wires..Orange, black and black w/white stripe. I also trashed my voltage regulator. Dyna makes a damn good cdi and it's cheaper then stock. I'd replace your wiring harness or at least go over it wire by wire and repair it as required before you drop in a new cdi..it could be as simple as a bad connection(remove the old harness completely, then cut it open and trace wire by wire and use a multi-meter to measure resistance and continuity). Also check the wires out of the cdi..the plastic wears down and breaks which will cause it to ground out and not spark. Edited April 22, 2004 by MotulMonsta Quote
