how often does a stock crank seperate? when is it usually recommended to have a crank welded, after what level of horsepower, compression, mods, hours, etc..?

thanks.

You should weld the crank no matter what mod(s) you have.  They can seperate at any time.....

im with boon, if you start raising the compression its a must also......and if it does seperate your party's over......

It's a good idea for any banshee owner to weld the crank the first time you split the cases. It's cheap insurance. We had one on a customer's motor that separated a lot on a stock engine (like 1/4"). We trued it to within .001" since the crank got pulled out 8 thousandths and welded it up but if they separate too far you are looking at big repair bills.

i am getting port work done soon and will have my moter apart for a couple weeks. I have no reason to split the cases but maybe i should....just to have the crank welded? how mush would this cost, can i do it myself or have a expirienced welder do it, even if he has never done somthing like this before? is this just a bead or really welded?

thanks...kevin

From the info I've gathered crank seperation is like playing russion ruelete, the gun could go off at anytime but if you add power mods, pipes, porting, higer compression, you are adding more bullets to the barrel and odds of seperation go up with each addition. :shootself: I guess as a general rule most people wait untill replacing the top end after adding compression to get the crank welded or get it done concurrently with port work and or major motor mods and adding really high compression.
