Oregon Dunes

Yah I read about it in yesterdays newspaper. What they are saying is that nobody can camp on sand anymore at the beginning of next year. I was at the dunes yesterday and my buddy showed it to me. I was pretty pissed, and now all of the campgrounds are going to be jammed full of peeps. I think it's going to be interesting with how many people are going to try to camp next year. I'm not sure why they are doing this but my guess is that since you can't have beer on the sand they don't have enough people to patrol the area.

I hate hearing about this shit. Where I ride, I have 2 choices: St Anthony and Sand Mountain. Sand Mountain looks like a garbage dump after a big weekend. There are around 6 dumpsters in the camping area. St. Anthony looks like a groomed track, and there are 2 dumpsters at Egin Lakes. I HATE seeing all the garbage left behind at Sand Mountain after a holiday weekend. I know what will happen eventually, and it sux that most of us that take care of ourselves in the sand are punished by a few assholes.

BTW Dumont has NO dumpsters, and it was clean as hell. I was very impressed.

Dude you think thats bad, You should see glamis or gordons well after new years. It looks like every trash truck in El centro got lost on the way to dump and left it on the sand drags. Its a sad day when they close all dune riding due to a small percent of people.

I cant agree with you all more. The small percentage of "trashers" are ruining the fun for everyone. I live on the oregon coast and see what people leave behind after camping, and it pisses me off to no end. I have filled my truck up more than once picking up after other idiots. id like to find out where thy live and have it all dumped in their front yards!! maybe then they may open their eyes.

If anyone gets info as to when the meetings are held in florence concerning the dunes, please post them here and or send me an e-mail directly. If I have the info, I will goa nd ai will get as many people as possible to go with me. It is unreal that tehy are going to close down the sand camping. Even with the sand camping it is over crowded in the camp grounds. Basically they are killing any camping trips for those who cant make plans a year in advance. (Besides, with the campgrounds so crammed packed, I don't want to be there anyway).

Florence needs to realize they have nothing to offer and the dunes are the bread and butter for there economy. If I am going to the coast without my bikes, I am going to Newport and or Lincoln City. Then to Depot Bay, Coos Bay and even Yachats. If Florence keeps alienating the riders who bring them and the businesses money year round, they will eventually dry up. (Of course now they are getting a casino which I guarntee will not help our cause).

We need to be vocal....and professional about our concerns. It burns me when we pay for our bikes, pay for our licence, pay for our parking permits and pay to camp on and on and the city keeps slapping us in the face.

rjvioght,

I totally agree. When I was 17 or 18, 10 years ago, I couldn't plan a trip that far in advance, was too clueless, and the internet didn't have the info like it does now on all the camp sites to set up a trip to the dunes. Hell, my friends and I were extremely fortunate if all of our bikes were running at the same time and we had gas money to make it there. We just got in my dads truck and went for it and if we couldn't have camped on the sand then we probably would have been screwed, especially comming from 7 hours away. You have my support all the way. You are 100% correct, most of those small towns would starve if it weren't for duners. The larger ones like Florance and Coos Bay might not be immediately hurt but as soon as the many businesses that depend on the revenues from a few turists here and there to stay a float start going out of business they will bring down many more with them and before you know it, those towns will be hurting even worse. They don't realize how much cash stays in town from those guys in the $250K motorhomes with the Hummer and 10 quads.

Got this from the forest service web site. Still a pain in our neck, but it does not sound as though they are going to close it down permenant. I imagine they will end up with designated areas for non-formal campsites on the dunes and they will probabally throw out some out houses and find a way to suck more money out of us.

The other issue I heard about revolves around a pathetic little bird called the snowy clubber or something like that. This was a problem 15 years ago and the research the tree huggers did was bogus and they were given a swift kick in the ass. I hope for the same response this time. I think that group wants the entire dune system shut down, not only for ATV enthusiasts but also to hikers, horse back riders and any other person other than themselves. YOu know how it goes. So it looks like we have two battles going on. One wants to shut the dunes down, nothing new, the other wants more control and money. Again, nothing new. We should try to stay involved though and make sure one, that they dont make campsites out so far that I have to spend another 15 grand on my truck just to get my bike and trailer out to it, and two, make sure the Tree Huggers don't just get their way. I ahve way to much money tied up int this sport to be told some little bird is not smart enough to move its eggs to a safe location.

Anyway, here is the artical.

Reedsport, OR- The sand camping program at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area will remain unchanged for this year. Proposed changes that would designate sand camping sites and require visitors to camp only in designated sites will not take place until next year, according to recreation managers.

“The environmental assessment has taken longer to complete than anticipated”, said Acting Deputy Ranger Mike Harvey. “It's a complex project and things just didn't come together as quickly or easily as we had hoped they would.”

Work on the environmental assessment will continue, with a decision expected in late May and implementation of the potential changes to the sand camping program expected to take place beginning in January 2005.

As a result of the delay in instituting the proposed changes, fees will remain unchanged in 2004. This year, as in past years, a $5.00 fee will be required. Fees cover camping from 12:00 midnight to 12:00 midnight each day. A Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Pacific Coast Pass, Golden Age, Golden Access, Golden Eagle, or the new Washington and Oregon Recreation Pass will cover the fee.

A Sand Camping permit must be secured for the days people will be camping on the sand. Permits are available at the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center in Reedsport or at fee machines at the South Jetty Road, Siltcoos Road, Umpqua Staging #3, Spinreel Staging, Horsfall Road, and fee stations at Umpqua #2 and Hauser.

During Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day holiday weekends, reservation permits are required for the Goose Pasture and Hauser to Horsfall areas. As last year, the area known as Bark Road will be included in the holiday weekend permit system.

Reservations for holiday weekends will be available on April 1, 2004. Those interested in reserving a campsite may call the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center between 8:30AM and 4:00PM, at 541.271.6084. More information is available on the Siuslaw Forest web site at www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw.

The changes to the sand camping program were initiated in an effort to address problems relating to crowding from dispersed camping, resource protection, and employee and public safety at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The changes will also promote greater accountability for litter and resource damage by sand

Alright guys! Guess what I did?! I just called one of those guys listed above and I happened to get a hold of John Zapell. I wanted to clear a lot of this crap up because I to have spent too much money on this awesome sport.

So what he told me is that they are currently doing this Environmental Assessment which will do tests on all areas of the dunes. I'm not exactly sure what they are testing though. After they get the results they are going to propose these changes to happen, which would be designating camping spots. Key word being Proposal! The main reason for this is that they can't hold a group of people accountable for litter or what not and with this they would be able to track everything better. The proposal is to have about 130-160 campsites on the dunes instead of being able to camp anywhere. So if you buy a camping fee you won't also have to buy a day use fee. Basically it costs the same he said. He also said that they are trying to develop all of the areas more with paved roads and that includes Horsefalls. So all of the people will have more places to park and it will have a bigger day use area.

On normal weekends he said that you probably won't have to reserve any spots but on the big weekends and holidays he said it would be a good idea. He said the longest you can reserve a spot would be for 120 days. I don't think anyone can plan that far ahead because things always change. Well except for the holidays. So hopefully this won't change things too drastically but if anyone has any questions about what they are trying to do I would suggest calling one of these three people.

Thanks for calling on that. IN my haste to read the article, I did not even look at the contact people or I would have called. That is kind of what I figured they were going to do anyway.

I guess he did not say anything about that bird then so that is good.

Take Care and keep the shiny side up!!
