For Those With Stock Axles

black electrical tape wrapped around the two axle nuts then carry the tape about 6 inches down the axle. Learned it from some people I rode with this weekend that use the stock axle for amateur xc racing.

Why not just use a dab of blue lock-tight on the outer nut? The tape idea is a good temporary fix though.

Yeup my uncle did that with mine when he raced it b4 i bought it from him. I still wrap it with tape when im done workin on it.

I dont think this will actually keep the nuts from loosening. This would however be a great indicator to let you know that the nut-nuts have moved. Great tip. Thanks.

No weld for me... Isnt it crazy how much they want for a nut cut in half with a set screw tapped in? I am tempted to try to do the same with a stock nut.. I am sure the metal is too soft.. There isnt any way I am paying $40 for a frigging nut...

safety wire is a good idea but there isnt anything to hold the nuts to except to each other and thats the problem with the nuts. Even though one is supposed to lock the other in place they sometimes spin together and thats where the electrical tape comes in place. You could try the thread lock stuff but it will probably ust wear off from the constant contact with sand, dirt, mud and water.

That may be true but I will throw my money with safety wire before tape. I see the physics but the tape deal just dont cut it for me. I would put my money on wire before tape any day.. If it were up to me I would rather drill a very small hole in my axle to make sure the wire will never give than rely on tape. Of course that is just me. This is gonna open a pool of posts saying that drilling a hole in the axle will weaken it... Oh well.... If you are willing to rely on tape then why not?....

If you use the procedure given in the Clymer or factory shop manual to tighten the nuts and use the medium loctite 242 (Blue I think) the nuts will not back off. Given that the appropriate torques are used along with the thread locker, you shouldn't have any problems. I cann't believe that electrical tape will hold the nuts in place when it takes about 180 ft-lbs of torque to tighten the nuts together. What may be happening with the tape is that the nuts back off enough to get the tape into the threads and then the nuts slow their rotation. I for one would not and will not rely on electrical tape to hold the axle on my bike.

if you have a big problem with it get some red lock tight nuts will never come off

Before I changed to the new lock nut, I would use blue Locktite. It would hold up great with appropriate torque settings.
