Take more/ Better pics. Remove your clutch assembly. Yes the cases split. Get creative, throw a rag between gears, and take it off.

I see the adjustment screw hanging out a bit, your gears have definitely took somewhat of an ass whooping, chewing on that broken shit. Remove your clutch assembly. Then you will more then likely find out what it was. Hard to see for me. Not do what?

You're less than an hour from havin engine out and tore down. Might as well pull it and tear down to be safe. You'll get all the answers you need here but best advice is to get a Clymers
