nrakovec Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Everything was working great electrically when I started my top end rebuild a bit ago. Finally got everything back together and went to start break in on the new pistons and it wouldn't fire up. Pulled out the plugs (new B8ES, properly gapped) and I don't have spark. I don't suspect any specific parts since everything was working great when I shut it down last, so that would leave wiring and connectors as likely sources. Any ideas on where to start or best course of action/checklist to diagnose this problem? Couple other notes: The bike has a rewound stator and TORS eliminated. Thanks! Quote
sheerider11 Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Coil is closest and easiest to knock off a plug. Then the stator plug is the next closest plug. Did you pull the motor? Is the on/off switch on? Quote
nrakovec Posted December 26, 2014 Author Report Posted December 26, 2014 I did not pull the motor for the top end, made sure the on/off switch was in the on position as well as the key. Tether switch is installed. As far as I could tell, all connections between CDI unit, coil, and stator looked secure with the coil plugs being the most suspect of all of them, but still seemed connected. I was going to grab an ohm meter from work today and try to check connections for continuity, is there specific locations I should check? Quote
sheerider11 Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Yes. Check the on off switch and tether first. Ohm the plug caps. Trim the wires back 1/4" and screw on caps. New if yours tested bad. And then whip out a clymers and check from there. The coil check in clymers is wrong. Check cap to cap for the resistance. Quote
Dixie normus Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Question. Did you happen to install new plugs with the new topend? I had a brand new ngk plug that was shorted Internally. Killed all spark. Worth checking if this is the case Quote
trickedcarbine Posted December 27, 2014 Report Posted December 27, 2014 Don't just check the connections, check the leads going in to the back of each connector fitting. Quote
Larry's Shee Posted December 27, 2014 Report Posted December 27, 2014 Don't recall who' but site sponsor recomended ground wire from coil to engine. Steel (frame) is not good conductor od elictricity. Might try that, and cleaning all connections/grounds. Quote

gusto Posted December 27, 2014 Report Posted December 27, 2014 Could you post up a pick of your extra ground wire and where you have run it to? Quote
