farmergunner Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 I did a compression test on a banshee I just picked up and it was reading 30 so I took the jugs off and found the rings were broke. The cylinders look good inside and are smooth. I mixed the cylinder and they are still with stock perimeters so I ordered stock 64 mm pistons and rings. My question is do I need to hone the cylinders before installing the new pistons or can I go ahead and install. I have never had to hone a stock bike before but I see a lot of people on here saying they did it when they replaced the pistons. Thanks jamie Quote
trickedcarbine Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Yes. Any time new shit goes in. There was a ring in pieces? So there may even be enough damage to need a bore. The pistons are already bought? I sure hope the bores aren't all egg shape and scarred up. Quote
farmergunner Posted May 30, 2014 Author Report Posted May 30, 2014 Yes one of the rings was in three pieces but still in its slot. There is no visible scarring on the bore and when I mic'd the cylinder it was all within stock spec still Quote
sheerider11 Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Did you take 6 measurements to make sure it's not an egg? Quote
Banman1122 Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 You need to check them with a micrometer and a telescoping gage to check the bore an inch down and in 6 places. Top mid and bottom front to back and left to right. A caliper only can check the top and bottom the middle is very important to check as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Banman1122 Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Also a light hone is good so the new rings can seat properly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
