Bought 2 banshees off craigslist (I will ask about the other in a seperate thread). This one was bought broken, the guy said he had 10k in it, took it off his hands for $1500 and surprised me and my buddy with a tote full of extra parts worth another grand, so it was a bangin deal! Will attempt to post pics, as Ive always sucked at it o.O..

The mods I know of, in his posting, he said TSS/Athena 421cc Kit, Wossner pistons, and something a long the lines of I'm guessing was supposed to say new CNC machined head(the posting cut off at this point). As far as internals go, thats all I know of, I'm unsure the brand of the crank, the head and cylinder both have Athena on them, so I dont know if generally a certain crank goes along with that kit. Then of course the common bolt on mods, Toomey pipes, larger radiator, vforce reed valves w/carbon reeds, larger Keihn carbs, and I think thats all for the engine related mods. And this engine was JUST put together(I don't know who did it) the tops of the pistons are shiny and new!! So this could have happened from someone getting on it too hard after a fresh rebuild, but I would think the rod would be ok unless he stuck a piston and the rod went from that?

The problem is the clutch side rod broke, so of course the piston skirt is gone, and it trashed the cylinder, and beat on the case a little, I know Im going to need a piston, crank, and cylinder. My main question is, what can I check as the reason the rod broke? So I dont fix it, and throw another rod. The engine is all torn down and I can check anything if you need more info!

From what I have read, the hot rod cranks seem to be a decent priced reliable +4 crank? And are there any common problems with the Athena kits? Should I do away with them and run something else?

Thanks in advance!!!

I wouldnt call that a bargain deal. There isnt much done to that bike as far as mods go, and the motors is a complete do over. That crank looks wangish to me. If it infact is, thats the reason for the failure. You will have to decide how much you want to spend on the rebuild. Are the cases good? At this point you can buy a stock stroke crank and use stock or aftermarket cylds or build something bigger. IMO Id watch for a used 4mil cub or a set of ported 4mil stock cylds and and start the rebuild. If you have some money to spend Id look to a site sponsor to get you hooked up with a new setup, that way you have their knowledge to help you along the way.

Its a deal. Around me you could sell that rolling frame for 1k ALL DAY if it has a title. Parting out the pipes carbs etc and misc things youd easily get your money back. Id just throw a set of OEM ported cyl and a 4 mil hot rod in there. My friend just bought some locally with pistons for $800 thing runs like a raped ape. Interested in selling anything off it?

its an import china rod.. junk.  BUT there is a chance the motor was not setup right at all and some other issue caused the fail.  imean looking at the damage maybe somehow it started and the head clearance was WAY off..  and snap crackle pop  bye bye motor

if it was me  trash all of the borken stuiff and just start completely over..   OR  just part the whole thing out.  i wouldnt try and salvage any of the broken screwed up parts.

Thanks for all the replies!!! Have decided for now to just put it back to stock, since we have all the parts to do it. =)

Should I send the stock crank off to someone to check it out? Or any advice before putting it back to stock to keep it reliable?

Thanks!!

And for anyone who might have wanted a closer look at the crank
