So i pulled the head to change head gaskets the other night, found the pistons to be very loose so i figured great time to rebuild. I resealed and torqued the head and did a leakdown test which it passed with flying colors, pulled the jugs off and the right cyl had a very large portion of the ex. Side skirt was gone. How can i be sure there are no pieces in the case without splitting the case halves?

I found several of the pieces in the head pipe, what i dont understand is the piston is beat to death on top but the ports are not nicked up nor is the head, there are no visible signs of pieces rubbing the crank. Im trying to avoid splitting this thing like the plague.

Doesn't take a very big piece to take out a bearing, bigger piece to take out a brand new piston/fresh bore. $25-30 for a Clymers manual , couple hours to split = peace of mind . You can leave trans in case , flush crank brgs , oil them up ,put it back together. JMHO, your results may vary.

sounds like a severe case of detonation on one cylinder or both --- mabye too lean on the top end of the throttle?? did both cylinders do the same thing

i agree id split the cases if it were me might cost a few bucks in gaskets and some time but think of how much your gonna spend if somethings in there and wipes out your motor. Thats the way i try and look at it in those situations.

i pulled the head to change a blown head gasket, found the pistons to be very loose, so i put the head on to do a leakdown before i tore the motor down. its fairly hard to check crank seals for leaks with the head and cylinders off. :)

haha....ya i got how to do the leakdown test lol.....i was just confused as to why you bolted it back on.....totally forgot that you said your head gasket blew and that's why you had the head off in the first place...lol
