flatbedin Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Here's the deal, I live in Ga and we ride a lot in the fall and winter months. I would like to get a port job before the riding season starts. Seems like all the big names on here have long lead times 3 to 5 weeks. I called Lakes Motorsports and they said about a week. I'm needing a stock stroke dune/play type port. Has anyone one here used Lakes for port work? How were the results? Guy at Lakes said about 65hp with his port work. What about those viper sleeves on their website? Anybody used those? Quote
BANSHEE HP Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 mike at lakes does good work, you wont have a problem with service or performance. his machining is good too if your going to do the sleeves. Quote
Larry's Shee Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 I have known Mike for over 10 yrs. Customer service is top notch. Altho I can't comment on how his porting works , I have seen several examples over the yrs and he does smooth work . He does all his own machine work in house. Quote
trickedcarbine Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Mike Has done my last two motors, and they were titties. When Mike Gilmore tells you what he will do to your motor he is serious. He isn't a huge name but if he is involved in your build, you will be happy. I currently run a 4mil with his porting on my trail/ice bike and it was so radically smooth that the only way to out run it on the lake is to get an after market cylinder. Just be patient and he will work his magic. Just remember, with any shop work, things can always change. Just because a guy tells you a week today, doesn't mean that the work load won't change tomorrow and put a delay in things. Both me and my buddie's got our cylinder back with in two weeks though. bode1 Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I know that Kevin at HJR has a fast turn around time. I think he said 2 weeks for me I had it back in 10 days from when I shipped it and that was coast to coast. Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 I just had my cylinders bored and honed by Mike, He got them Wednesday and I had them sitting on my porch Monday afternoon, Great turn around time. He answered all of my questions in a timely manner and I'm definitely going to be a repeat customer. Quote
trickedcarbine Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Wow! Old thread..... I sounded like such an idiot endorsing mikes port work. That motor was ok, but compared to the passion 4mm or even the new port work coming up from DFE that thing was a dog. Live and learn. Lakes is great for grabbing some parts or bore/hone work. But there are definitely way to many other good engine builders out there to have lakes do the port work. Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Yeah I just had a bore and hone done. Came back with pistons and top end gasket kit for $315 which is the best bang for the buck I could find. Quote

trickedcarbine Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Do you have a passion 4mm?I do, and it's pretty damn stout. It destroyed the lakes 4mm big bore stock cylinder motor I used to think was as good as it got. That motor was 440 CC's and only managed 44ft lbs and 77hp with them tuning it. Truthfully there was intake and exhaust work done similar to most motocross stuff and next to zero transfer work. Just the windows for durations. Although it did come on early, but any motor that size should. The passion set up being about 60 CC's smaller destroys it! People dog Jim, but his stock cyl 12 port is a pretty bitchin motor. I've since tweaked it and it should be an upper 80's if not 90 hp motor this season. Quote
Whitbread Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 My cylinders were originally supposedly drag ported by lakes motorsports by the PO. When I finally tore it down, yikes is all I have to say. A kid with a dremel probably could've done a better job. Was very rough overall, transfers in cylinder weren't touched, and exhaust port was only raised about 5°. Quote

I know he has caught some hell lately but when I talked to him on the phone he seems really good. So I am stuck between cam and Jim. I will figure it out when this riding season ends Quote

wayne_smith97 Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 I was leaning that way. Have talked to him a few times about what kind of setup I wanted. Quote
