BluBanshee98 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 I have a $500 "project hillshooter" banshee that I just pulled apart to get the frame powder coated. I figured while I had the motor out I would pull it apart because I had problems with the tranny leaking oil out every seal possible so I wanted to pull it apart and reseal it to freshin it up. When I pulled the jugs off, one of the OEM pistons had a crack in the skirt. The bores look fine and once I get done with my move from alaska to arizona I plan to tear it back down and make this my drag bike. So bottom line I don't want to spend much. I found some WSM pistons for a good price. Now will standard bore cast WSM pistons fit a stock jugs? That is without any clearance issues. The pistons I found are not forged and I don't really need them to be. Just want both pistons to match and new rings without spending a fortune on stock yamaha crap that I'd probably have to order from the stealer anyway. Short term repair! Only reason I am doing all this is we are going to do a little dune tour on our way south and I want it running for the trip. Thanks Quote
vulvafan537240 Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 you're asking if a stock bore wsm piston will fit a stock bore jug? yes. Quote
BluBanshee98 Posted March 5, 2010 Author Report Posted March 5, 2010 Sorry for the dumb question... Never used wsm and wanted to make sure the were true to size. Thanks Quote
vulvafan537240 Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 there are no dumb questions. unless your name is elkaracing shee jk elka Quote
Rodneya Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 I thought WSM are supposed to be forged pistons. Why did the skirt crack on the old piston? It is usually from excessive bore wear that allows the piston to rattle around in there. Get your bores measured at a machine shop first before buying pistons. Quote
midlifecrisis Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 You could do a search regarding the WSM pistons on here. I had a long list of responses about them when I started rebuilding my heads. As far as I can remember they are forged, and made by the same company that produces pistons for Audi, Porsche, and other high end european cars, so they must be true, right? Not 2 strokes though, as someone stated to me! Quote

BluBanshee98 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Report Posted March 9, 2010 The dude before me had a trinity 2 to 1 intake setup. When I went to buy the bike still not running he had put the stock carbs back on it. I think he pry left a piece of garbage in the intake and it found its way into the cylinder. You can tell where it hit. I agree though skirt failure is usually from a wollard out bore. Now what I was getting at with my original question is that you have a stock 64mm bore. You go buy a Wiseco or WSM forged piston 64mm bore....but the piston clearance isn't right anymore for the forged piston....or do they factor that in with STD forged pistons and under mill them. Theres a smoking deal in the for sale section right now but I am concerned with throwing a forged piston in a stock piston bore and having it seize. Thanks Quote
AKheathen Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 holy crap, if i knew earlier, i have a bore gauge set you could use to get your specs and a bunch of parts/tools. i live on lake otis/huffman. i'm flying to work tomorrow, but you can still catch me tonight if you want, or i will be gone for 3 weeks.
