oldschoolhuffy Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 ive been looking at 4 mill cranks the only thing i dont understand is what is the difference between the short and long rod i figured they would all be the same size rod if they all have the same stroke any help u guys could give me would be great thanks Quote
BigRed350x Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 The short rod will rev faster and give you a little snappier feeling power. They also put more of a side load on the pistons as they travel up and down. The long-rod will rev a little slower, but you probably won't notice it that much on a banshee. The longer rod will give you a little better torque curve, and reduce the side-load on the pistons. The longer rod will also give you a longer dwell at TDC and BDC which comes into play with whoever does your porting and what you want to do with your bike. It comes down to personal preference and what you want to do with your bike. The general consensus is that the longer rod is the better setup, but you will hear mixed opinions. I've ridden both and the short-rod setups are really fun for playing around, hillshooting, tight spots, etc. The long-rod bikes make great torque for dune bikes. Quote
Burt Reynolds Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 I almost used a short rod so i didnt have to use 795 pistons Quote
RagunCajun Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 Wouldnt a lightened flywheel help it rev quicker in a longrod set up? I decided not to get mine lightened again. Didnt want to risk it coming apart again plus i think it would hurt my performance. Quote
jbooker82 Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 I had a lightened flywheel, and traded it for a stock one. I didnt like how it felt. Yea it might feel a little snappier but it also fell of and bogged way easier. I weigh 250 so the extra torque feeling of the oem flywheel is what I prefer. Quote
