moneybags Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 You try giving it some throttle when trying to start it? I have to pin mine to get it to start on purge gas. Quote
NYUK Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 you need new plugs after you purge it. i replaced the plugs everytime i put alky back in the tank. Quote

Bansh-eman Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 My bike doesnt like to start cold on alky. Do like NYUK said and swap the plugs, when you purged the motor did you let it suck all the gas out of the bowls or did you kill it? Be carful trying to start it on gas. Mine was so rish that it started to fill the crank case and I had to siphon the gas out. Quote

Ok, so I am new to the Alky game, can someone explain the need to purge your fuel system with gasoline, and if you need to even if you run the carbs empty of alcohol, etc.? I assume its due to alcohol absorbing moisture? Quote

I assume its due to alcohol absorbing moisture? Alky is very hard on metals. If it sits in your carbs it will cause corrosion. And if it sits inside your cases it can cause rusting. So you wash your motor out by running gas to eliminate these. Quote
Onesickcrewcab Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I had this happen to my bike. Turned out to be both floats were sticking. I guess I didnt purge it well enough cause the float needles were stuck in the carbs. I can look at my powerjet line and see that there is was no fuel filling the bowls because the line level didnt increase. Could be not getting any fuel. Advice would be to get some pipe plugs when your not riding it. It helps out. Quote
87sheerips Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I always resort to a litte splash of ether to get her goin!! Stubborn cold alky motors! lol Quote
sheefreak Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I would stay away from ether fellas, there is absolutely no lube properties to it. I have never had a problem starting my bike on purge fuel, sometimes a little stubborn, but always starts. If you need a shot of something, put a mix of gas and oil in a spray bottle, that will get it ignited. I have also had the floats stick after a while of sitting. Maybe didn't purge quite well enough??? I would check that and make sure you didn't suck up any dirt into the pilots while you are in there. I am sure it is something simple. Do you use the same oil to purge as you run in your alky? If not, you should. That right there can cause problems. Quote
desertdeweller Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 like mentioned above the floats might be stuck. Try tapping on the side of your bowls a few times with a hammer handle or something it will usually free them. Another thing is alky absorbs a lot of moisture from the air if it has been humid lately in your area it may have a lot of water in it. Quote
