87sheerips Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I built mine from scratch in about 3-4 months.. To where it sits for now at least!! Take your time, and do a TON of hunting for good used parts. Barder with people, trade if you can, make deals, and eventually everything will work out in your favor. it definitely takes patience if you want to save some cheddar! Quote
popa_top2000 Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Man I am in the same boat you are. I am military so obviously dont make alot of money and I have a family. I just started my fram up rebuild drag bike and I knew from the start I probobly won't hear my banshee run for about 2 years. I am doing pretty much everything myself to have extra money for parts. Im ok with that though because I love to polish, fabricate, paint and all that good stuff. My bike won't be the fastest bike on the drag strip but it will be a good start and I will have done everything myself. Good thing is I have paid all of my bills off except my gixxer (about 9 more months of paying) which is another expensive hobby. Quote
BigRed350x Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 I traded a bike for my drag bike which has just about every little goodie out there. So it only took me about 2 days worth of driving to meet firehead for the trade. lol! IMO a dune bike is just as bad as the drag bikes. My duner has been a work in progress for about 4 or 5 years now... There are too many goodies out there on the market to ever be finished. :geek: Quote

RagunCajun Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 I just did a frame up build. It's a playbike with a lot of focus on drag racing friends. It took a long time to build and im still tinkering with it. With working barely 32hrs/week and a potential to get layed off, it's rough. Just be fortunate you guys have jobs right now. Some of us arent as lucky. I have all the time in the world to work on the bike but no $$. I still didnt even touch the damn suspension yet Quote
dajogejr Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 It took me a few months to put my 10 mil bike together, but it took about two trips to the track with my 4 mil as a duner setup to say F this...I'm going full drag bike. LOL. Learn how to work the forums, how to look for parts for sale cheap, ebay, craigslist, etc. I don't have a lot of "new" parts on my bike. Most were found on ebay for cheap...to be honest. I got a 700 dollar crank (retail new) for about 200 bucks off ebay. It needed a bearing, so with my buddy who is able to do cranks, trannies, cases, etc., I have about 275 bucks in a crank. Roughly a 3rd of the price new. He also found me a Lonestar drag axle on ebay for about 350 bucks...in good shape. The guy had it listed wrong, and it only had a couple of bids. Just examples on how to save a few bucks. Like Shayne said, you're never done. Racing is only to pass time between rebuilds/upgrades....LOL. Quote
