Hey guys newbie to the shee's here with a question. I just picked up a 97 shee and was told the motor was locked up. He said it was running fine when a friend locked it up and he wasn't there. Thats his story but here's my problem. I removed the head, one piston was up and the other down. Both piston tops looked good and the one cylinder wall I could see looked good as well. I continued to remove the jugs and both came off very easy. Both pistons were fully intact and all the rings are still good. I put a scoket on the flywheel just to give it another try. Until now the kick started would not budge. It broke loose enough to move now and once I gotg the pistons off the rods I found out the left rod was bound up on the crank. With a little motivation it will move but I feel the bearings is frooze up. Since this will require the crank to be removed, repaired and replaced is it cheaper to buy a new one or just repaire the bearing and run it? This shee will be used for trail riding only and I'm really not interested in making this a rocket ship in any way. Thanks in advance for the opinions and suggestions.

I would replace it ,there is obviously serious bearing wear from locking up ,it would be safer to buy a used stock crank in good condition from someone on the site

Thanks for the input guys. I have been looking around ebay and found a couple that interest me. What are your opinions of Weisco cranks. I have looked at one guy who has a complete crank with seal and bearings for $279 plus shipping. on the Weisco site that kit is almost $600! For my riding needs I would prefer reliabilty as opposed to all out performance. My normal ride is a 400 Kodiak 4x4 and I just want something to play around on. Thanks again.

if your happy with the power the way it was and your not looking at stroking it or doing any port work, just buy a used stock crank. there are plenty of them with little to no hours on them that can be had from 75-125 bucks....

 

now is the time to thinkabout freshining up the top end as well while you have the motor taken apart.

out of curiosity.. how much did you pick up that shee for.. and how is its condition other than a bad crank..

To be honest I'm not sure how much power it was putting out before it locked up. I bought it that way. I have rebuilt a smaller 2 stroke before and that gave me the itch for this project. I'm going this afternoon to have the pistons and jugs checked and miced. It is a 97 model so I'm sure it has been rebuilt before. If I find out it has already been bored 20 or 30 over is a stock crank still ok?

 

As for the price, I only paid $300 for it. Considering I seen one on ebay that was a rolling chasis with fenders go for over $400 I figure I got a pretty good deal.

Yeah i felt it was a good deal as well! Again I just wanted this as a new project and in the end have a toy to get out and play on. Since my main goal is reliability, is there one brand I should go with over another? I do also plan on doing the top end as well while I got it this far!

great deal on the shee. i picked one up for $70 last summer and had it running and all back together for another couple hundred. few and far between for that price. good luck.
