375hp banshees Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 """DID NOT WANT TO PULL IN 3RD OF 4TH UP THE HILL""" how long & steap of a hill? bogged down (to rich, gearing?) rev'd but didn't pull hard (running outa fuel ?) Quote
AKheathen Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 wha pipes r u running? pull a hill like that with a plug chop. does it feel like the clutch could be slipping? Quote
278 Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 36mm carbs are too big, you are going to lose power with those minimal mods, most people on here that run 4mil. or 421 cubs with 4mil.'s are between 33mm and 37 ish. With all of my mods going to a 28 or 30mm carb would give me minimal performance gains and going to a 32 or 33 really wouldn't do much either, so unless your planning on running a 4mil. down size those suckers. Many people don't understand that bigger isn't always better when building a motor you have to find balance and one problem is over carbing a motor. What happens is think of it like this... If you run for a little bit you start breathing hard and you go from breathing through your nose to opening your mouth maybe an inch, you don't open it as wide as it will go, why is this? because then there is some resistance and it allows you to get the needed amount of air at the right time and smoothly, if your mouth is open as wide as it will go you force alot of air in a short amount of time, but your breathing is short not smooth. It could be that loss of power causing the bog Quote

I AM RUNNING T 5'S WITH 15 FRONT AND 40 REAR AND SME WITH MY CUZ, IT REVS HARD PUT JUST WONT PULL, SO U THINK I SHOULD GET A SET OF 28MM CARBS THEN 36 TO BIG? RUNNING 300 MAINS ALSO Quote

RUNNING 300 MAINS ALSO You could go to 28's but even the stock carbs will do they are 26's. The stock carbs are actually pretty under rated. With all my mods I am going to run stock carbs. A guy I know has a motor that has a dune port on it and built a little more than mine and runs stock carbs and he says they do just fine. So if you can trade yours for some 28's then yeah do it, but if you can sell yours and buy a stock set for cheap and put the extra $$$ to some other part of the shee then do it! Quote

278 Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 (edited) I'm guessing it's the drag race port? In that case you can go a little higher but I'd say with a full drag race port I wouldn't go higher than 32mm but with that drag port I'd go 30-32mm. Edited January 5, 2009 by 278 Quote
88bansheebitch Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 First off, what kind of port work do you have? And yes im gonna have to say 36's are some pretty damn big carbs. If you have a mild/trail/dune or whatever port job, personally i wouldnt run anything bigger than 33s.Up a hill with 36's is just way over kill unless you have a set of drag ported stockers...you're probably drowning in fuel, thats why on a heavy load up a hill you're cylinders cant pull as much fuel in as your carbs are giving Quote

SO WHY DOES IT RUN HARD AS HELL ON FLAT GROUND? LIKE THE SAND DRAGS? Quote

LIKE THE SAND DRAGS? yes 28s are to small for a drag port. The reason why it runs awesome and pulls hard on some flat land is simple..its not under a heavy/hard load.Ride a bike down the street..ride a bike yup a hill. The heavy load is gonna kill ya beacause youre under a load going up a hill Quote
Handyman Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 yeah i'd say to bump the timing to +4, down size on the carbs if you can...and go from there.. Quote
AKheathen Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 with bigger carbs the airflow is alot slower, causing the fuel not to atomize as well. this also makes it harder to controll the venturri effect. on a v8, it's alot easier to calculate max airflow and match the carb to it. 99% of people under estimate the beauty of a 2 barrel.
