skuddlebug Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 What's the best method to break-in new pistons and ring? gas ratio, full throttle/half throttle, how long? Thanks for any help you can offer. Quote
locogato11283 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 make sure the jetting is pretty close.. i start it up and let it idle for about 5 mins. then rev the fuck out of it.. i do this a couple times and then ride the shit out of it. break in complete. Quote
Mjv420 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 My method is the same as loco's. When I rebuilt mine a couple 3 years back I let it warm up and then run the piss out of it. I've read and talked to many different sources whom say this is the best way to break a bike in. Yamaha and others will recommend lightly running the bike for so many tanks of gas before running it hard though. Quote
spike Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I've seen all kinds of way's over the years. heat cycles seems to be the most common way, start it up, let it idle until nice and warm. stall it let it cool, repeat 3 times. great time to sinc carbs and dial in your idle and such. once that's done ride the shit outta IT! KaosBanshee44 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 another good tip is when you install your pistons just manually turn your flywheel a bunch of times and manualy seat the rings then do your heat cycles. I think it was on NitroTate on HQ that mentioned it on his banshee rebuild video as well. Quote
jamebo Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I ran mine lightly and varied the throttle for 4 or 5 tanks of fuel, then let'er rip after that. Quote
sheerider1026 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 i do mine a little different.. when i assemble the motor i coat all parts in my premix oil.. then do about 4 or 5 heat cycles.. then run about 4 tanks through it being easy on it.. than after that i run the dogshit outta it!!! motor has great compression and still runnin strong.. locogato11283 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Especially if your taking it easy...lol no shit.. i just hillclimb mine. i might go through 2 tanks a year.. Quote
bode1 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I read an article on a website about breaking in motors that I thought was interesting. But it basically said to you have to run it hard to seat the rings. It is pretty interesting so I just tracked it back down and attached it. He talks mostly about sport bikes, but claims it applies to everything else. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Quote
mopar1rules Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 (edited) start it up and let it idle to get up to temp. then give it hell. don't be afraid of going wide open. just don't hold it there very long.....like 3-4 sec. basically, just drive it like your going to normally drive it. no need to let it sit and rev the piss outta it, cause you need a load on the machine to seat the rings. this topic should just be a sticky or something, as it gets brought up way too much on here. skuddlebug Posted October 19, 2008 Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 ok now what about gas ratio? i've heard from 30:1 up to 50:1 for break in then run normal ratio after that Quote
BellicoseBanshee Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 ok now what about gas ratio? i've heard from 30:1 up to 50:1 for break in then run normal ratio after that Use the same ratio you will use during normal operation... Quote
