Of course its worth trying. Just do it right the first time, if you're not comfortable doing it take it to someone that is.

I have done them before just not on a cylinder I was just wondering if it would hold up to the cooling system and cylinder pressures. was also worried that the tap might distort the top of the cylinder enough that it wouldn`t let it seal right

I currently have 2 stud holes heli-coiled. 1 has been that way for 3 years, the other for about 6 months and it is the long one in the front. Be careful doing it or take it to someone who is experienced with doing it.

On my old cylinders i had 6 helicoils for the studs and never had a problem, but i agree that if you don't know how to do it right then take it to some one that does.
