Hey What’s Up HQ’ers! I have a returning customer with a 98’ Banshee with a completely stock engine that I have worked on in the past. He brought it to me yesterday saying it has a problem with extreme loss of power and shuts off after about an hour of riding. He said if he lets it sit and cool down for about 25 to 30 minutes then restarts it to ride it again the problem comes back about the same time frame. So this is where I come in. I looked it over and I took it for a test ride. It did it to me just ripping it up and down my stone driveway. In no way it’s overheating. I removed the keihin carbs and checked them over and they were clean of any signs of contamination. He runs VP C9 for fuel and Klotz Super Techniplate at 32:1. I checked the reed and they were good. I switched all the electrical components from a known good running Banshee and nothing changed. The clutch is working properly. The front and rear brakes are working properly nothing hanging up. I did a compression test both cold and at operating temperature. Cylinders at cold was 110 and cylinders at operating temp was 115. Did a leak down test and it sat at 6 psi over night with no pressure loss. No engine noises present. The Banshee runs and rides normally. Now this morning I brought it out and started it up and let it warm up for about 4-5 minutes. Took it out for a rip nearby my house and I got it nice and hot the it did it. Now I noticed with the engine hot it feels like it’s got a ton of compression. So I got it restarted and limped it back to my house and it still feels like it has a ton of compression. I removed the spark plugs and nothing changed. So I drained all the coolant out of the system and removed the cylinder head and cylinders. Pistons and cylinder bores seems to be okay with just a slight sign of normal wear. Probably could just get away with new wrist pin bearings and rings on the pistons if needed. But that plan got blown out the window. When I went to check the crank. That’s where I found the problem. The lower rod bearings feel really crunchy with a small amount of side to side play with more being on the right side. Then when spinning the crank it self the main bearings also have a small amount of crunchy feeling and a small amount drag. I think he was lucky to catch this before it turned into something very catastrophic. So I’m going to be giving him an update on my findings today to find out what direction he wants to do moving forward with rebuilding it. I’ll be back with an updated soon. Thanks

Did this happen?

We did get the cylinders in Mar., but nothing can be done until we get the rods changed out on the crank. We took the crank to Crank Works for rebuild & rod length change in May. We'll see how long it takes. When we get the crank back, we can start on the porting & mock-up. Then have domes cut & get cylinders out for plating. It would be nice to have this all done before the end of Sept. but that's wishful thinking! 2BKING 👽

So earlier last week I helped a friend out with his diesel pickup. He let his wife drive the truck to and from her work. So my friend forgot that the truck was low on fuel. He told her to stop on her way home from work and put some diesel in it. So she wound up putting $60 of gasoline in it. Here is Nj you pump your own diesel but gas is full service. So we over the holiday weekend we dropped the fuel tank and flush the fuel system out and installed a new fuel filter. We ended up with 30 gallons of contaminated diesel/gasoline mixed. Now to catch a fuel thief part. My neighbors 18yo son bought a 2020 Chevy 2500 HD with the Duramax at the beginning of May. So yesterday he came over and wanted to know if I could show him how to service his truck. Oil change, fuel filter and a new air filter. While I was showing him I happen to notice he was eye balling the 6- 5 gallon yellow diesel fuel cans sitting outside of my garage. So we get done servicing his truck and I told him that he needed fuel and that he should never let the fuel level get below 1/4 of a tank because then you start sucking up the water and other garbage on the bottom of the tank that’s not good for the fuel system. Now speed things up. This morning I come out of my house to go to my garage to get my e-trike out to go to work and noticed that the yellow diesel cans were moved in a different direction. So I checked my rear door ring camera and lo and behold the neighbors son and 2 of his friends came over at around 4:30am and carried the fuel cans away and then about 30 minutes later they came back and put the fuel cans back. So all I did was put my hand on my head and then SMH. I then leave for work at 6:30am and get down the street and at the 4 way stop I looked both ways and noticed the neighbors son’s truck sitting on the side of the road with it’s hazard lights on. I ride up and asked him what happened (not telling him that I knew what he did) he said he was on his way to school and that turned the corner and the truck started to make a funny noise and then shut off. A couple minutes later his dad shows up asking him what wrong and his son says he doesn’t know. So I pulled his dad off to side and then told him I know what happened and then I showed him exactly what happened. His dad got pissed off at his son. So earlier this evening my neighbor and his son came over and the son apologized to me for stealing the contents from the 6 yellow fuel cans. I offered to help them fix the truck but they refused and they said they had the truck towed to the dealership to get fixed and his son was responsible for getting it repaired.
