XXXAdrenalineSports Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 I am reringing a 1987 banshee that still has the standard size yamaha pistons, Well i got the rings in the mail and started doing the work then i noticed there is an expander under the 2nd ring but my dealer doesnt show it on the microfiche/computer and it didnt come with the new rings. am i supposed to leave this expander in the groove or remove it? shanYE west Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 its a ring that goes underneath the the ring.. I guess you could say its a "pre" ring lol is it wavy looking? They help keep tension on the rings... I havn't seen them used in awhile though.. Quote
XXXAdrenalineSports Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 yea its a wavy ring but do i leave it in or out Quote
Bansh-eman Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 isnt that something more commonly used in 4 stroke pistons? Quote
mopar1rules Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 isnt that something more commonly used in 4 stroke pistons? yeah, it seperates the 2 small oil rings in the bottom groove of the piston....on 4 strokes that is. Quote
Hilarious Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 i dont think i am missing anything but with the (4) banshee engines i have put together, they all have 2 (what I call, lol) regular rings on each piston. Maybe the 87 model was the only one like this of its kind? Quote
xXBlessedWithDeathXx Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 I worked on a 98 with the same rings. its for stock factory pistons. i`m not sure why they are on there but they are there. Quote

This is not like the spacer between the 2 oil rings, this sits under the 2nd ring. You can remove it if you want... Some manufacturers still use them, some don't anymore. Quote
locogato11283 Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 what kind of rings did you get? did you go with a whole piston/ring set?? Quote
