About that time..

Hi

 

iv got a 1999 banshee that has not been rebuilt :geek:

 

i think its getting to be about that time but i want to be sure that my problems are not anyhting more than a rebuild

 

heres whats going on:

It has been exeedingly difficult to start and when it does it backfires like crazy out of the right pipe. not sure if this problem is related, but another thing it did when it did start is it would idle for a few minutes and i would go to hit the throttle, the mottor would sort of cut out until i let off the trottle then it would rev.. i have a clymers manuel and have decided to do a top end reguardless..

im also thinking i should clean outt he carbs. is there anything blatently wrong? i dont know what else it could be?

 

any help would be greatly appreciated becuase i am new to this whole rebuild thing

Mine was doing the same thing. I took it to CPI and they recomended a top end rebuild. it starts much better. no more backfire, and she runs great.

Not ruling out a fresh build but.. Sounds like it could be a problem in the pilot circuit also..

Perhaps give the cars a good cleaning.

yeah i figured it had to be either the top end or the carbs so i guess ill just go through with both. I have a Clymers; does anyone know of anything not mentioned in Clymers that i should/shouldnt do? ..im new to this

The top end is a pretty simple deal... I can't think of anthing off hand thats special that the book doesn't have... If you do run into any snags, helps a mouse click away..

I thought I also needed a top end rebuild, but a compression test said otherwise. I spend a couple of bux getting a tester from sears or somewhere and just test it. Then it will remove all doubts and questions. But if its a 99 and its never been done, Im gonna guess it is probably due if you have got a few hours on her. Good Luck!!!!

thnkas for all the help and sorry for the loong delay..

 

so i pulled the carbs and had em cleaned up. they were all gummed up and whatnot.. after doing that, it actually runs great. i checked compression and it is 115 in both cylinders.. prolly 'cause this bike doesn't get much ride time (unfortunately)... well im not so sure about doing the top end if the compression is okay (115 is okay right?)..any thoughts?

If your compression is 115 in both cylinders I wouldn't touch the topend. Rebuilds should only be done when absolutely neccissary, your cylinders only have so many rebuilds in them so use them sparingly.
