Hey everyone, first post here. I just recently swapped my 250R for a banshee. I was told blah, blah, blah.

The lowdown:

Bike starts in a kick or three. Revs great, idles well, bogs off idle. It appears to be all stock with the acception of the baffles removed out of the stock silencers. The airbox was missing some clips and the filter was dirty as hell. I saw some dirt that got passed the filter and is partially in the intake track. One carb is very dirty, the other cleaner, but still dirty. Slides at different heights.

I just picked up a compression tester to see if it needs a top end (was told it was new).

What should my compression be for a stock bike?

I plan on putting some money into it, but I do have kids and a wife...

I am looking to set up a good all around bike to race buddies, ride fire roads and trails with stream crossings. I live in Maryland at around 300-700 ft in altitude in my usual riding places. Im not looking to build a show bike, but I want it ro run its a$$ off and make people say wow when they get off of it. I want pipe, carb and jetting suggestions please.

I HUMBLY AWAIT YOUR SUGGESTIONS!!

125 psi is about average.....go to the classified and find some used toomey t5 or t6 pipes.....get an adjustable timing plate.....pull your carbs off and clean them and get them setup correctly...

someone has some 28mm chrome d-slides on the for sale topic.... Those are nice. get rid of the stockers, I say.

i have a almost new stock airbox with a pro-flo kit installed.(foam filter) want it?

Unless you ride in mud/wet conditions alot I would 86 the airbox. Get some clamp-ons,a set of pipes, adjustable timing plate, a cool head with 20-21 cc domes, jet accordingly. A high flow water impeller and big radiator wouldnt hurt.

In order to maintain some low end for trail riding, I dont want to go with too large of a carb, right? I need to keep some kind of airbox, because this bike will see mud and water.

BTW, what are the benefits of the 2 into 1 designs for both carb and pipes? As for the ignition, I wasn't going to bother with the adjustable plate. I was going to go with the Dyna FS ignition or the MSD. But I read that you need to charge a battery to run the MSD???

That set up would be good for the riding you do. I had 2into1 I had alot fun that motor. Had a mild port job it was rated at 65 h.p. thats all you need for that type riding. Plenty of power

However, I cant be loosing races to my buddies. I need to make sure that this bike wins. I know I want it all, but I only want to set this thing up once, then maintain it. Did you have a 2 into 1 pipe, carb or both?

as soon as it warms up a few degrees, Im going out to do a compression test. Then I can see where I have to start with this project. The guy that owned this bike was obviously a ride it till it dies kinda guy. Boy do I hate ignorance when it comes to simple basic maintenance.

Don't waste your money on a Dyna just yet.

Get a plate for a TON less...you're better off putting that money towards pipes.

And yes...I had a dyna at one time, back to a stock CDI now and a plate.

A dyna is great if you have time and money to tune it, custom program it on a dyno for your needs. Figure the cost of the CDI plus a few hundred more for the software/cable and dyno time to program it.

You could easily buy pipes and make a bigger difference. Clean up the air intake...too. if you ride mud, keep the box. if you don't, ditch it...

Pipes and air filter are the best mods for a stocker...

you said you like to ride fire roads with stream crossings.

for that you will need to keep the air box. you can get a

modified lid with an Outerwears pre-filter in the top. you would

still be ok to ride in most streams.

the biggest thing will be keeping the stock box sealed at the carbs.

it is a bitch, but a must.

i have a friend that ran a 2 into 1 intake and carb. he hated it and went

back to dual carbs. he runs 28mm PWK carbs now and he really likes it. he

also has T5 pipes and mild porting. that bike runs pretty strong.

you keep saying you want to beat all your friends bikes.

what are they riding ? are they all stock, or are they modded bikes ?

To name a few of the bikes, a Banshee Limited Edition, a scrambler 500HO, a kawasaki prairie 700. Obviously the 4x4's have the edge because they can get traction to the ground.

I am looking into a set of 28PWK's right now. If I add a toomey t-6 pipe kit with jetting and air filter, would this work well? If not, what jetting should I look into for this carb setup. I am going to keep the duals all the way around.

I dont mind putting some money into it, but I can go full out yet. Im sure it will eventually come to this, but I just want a strong runner that is going to be reliable. I am going out to test the compression right now. I will report back.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!!

Like said you want nice reliable machine..

You ride streams so you are keeping you airbox..

Start with a good set of pipes, change the filter, advance the timing, maybe a slight port job, bump your compression with either a cool head or just have the stocker done..I have a noss head, If I did it again I would have the stocker modified and spend the money else where...

If you do that you will have a nice running bike, doesnt seem like you ride with any crazy fast machines so Im sure you'll be able to hold your own...

I have simliar mods and my shee rips,I have 33pwk carbs, I bought them and now Im selling them bc the shee is fast enough like this...

I smoke all my buddies so its all good...My shee is very reliable, starts right up and runs all day with me kickin the shit out of it.....

Dont over due it bc It might be to much for the type of riding you have avaible around you....

good luck..

I have the MSD ignition, and they do make an inline charging system for it, that plugs in between the stator, and the voltage regualtor. It will charge the battery while riding, as long as the RPM's are above 3500, but you will need a cheap charger, that you can plug into a wall outlet, or hook up to a 12 volt battery on a car or truck. Sometimes the battery will lose it's charge, if the bike sits for extended periods of time.
