leadsled01 Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 New guy here. Let the flogging begin. haha.. I just bought a 1987 shee that has sat for 10 years. I rebuilt the carbs and cleaned the tank but now the damn thing doesn't have spark. After troubleshooting my trusty VOM said the coil was bad. I just got off the phone with my local quad dealer and am going to pick up parts tonight. Alittle about me. I'm 42 with family. Always liked riding and drinking. I had to get life flighted out of Wellsville Ohio one time when I wrecked my old Honda Odessey. I live near Akron Ohio and ride locally, summit and portage county. I also like old cars, I have a 1966 buick electra at the moment and an old honda 3 wheeler. I love to fabricate and build my own shit. Last year me and my son built a go-kart for him to ride untill he is old enough to ride the shee. Jerry Quote

leadsled01 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 welcome to the hq. let us know how the new coil works outpeter I picked up the new coil last night, but.... the damn thing shows open on the secondary side.Just like the old one.wtf.. According to my service manual and from reading info found here on the hq, you are supposed to read the secondary winding from the - terminal on the primary to the plug wire (which doesn't make alot of sense but thats what the book says). Anybody else ever run into this problem? I will install and try the new coil tonight but this just doesn't add up. Jerry Quote
leadsled01 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 I just did alittle digging in the search function and found where other people agree that the factory yamaha service book is incorrect for checking the coil. I'm going to write yamaha corporate a letter and see if that will get me anywhere. wish me luck!! Unbelievable that the factory manual has been wrong for 20 years and they continue to print newer versions with the same mistakes.. MAD!! I want my money back for this new coil that I don't need. leadsled01 Posted January 4, 2008 Author Report Posted January 4, 2008 Thanks for the warm welcome! FYI I went to my local yamaha dealer and bitched about the service manual being wrong and that I just spent $65 for a part I did not need. The service manager said he will have his electrical guru mechanic do some sort of secret coil check on my new and old coils. He comes back and says my old coil is way out of specs and the new one is right on spec. So I installed the new coil but still have no spark. Yes they lied to me! I also told him to call yamaha and tell them their manual is incorrect and should be corrected, he says "yamaha don't care about a bike they don't make anymore"....I will never go back to State 8 Motorcycle located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio ever again!
