Just sitting here drinking some relaxing beverages viewing this site agian and searching for lightened flywheels, sounds like a good idea. I was wondering if I could do this myself but wondering exactly what material is removed, Making it narrower like cutting a ring off the back side, or increasing the inside diameter? Just a thought, I know about how important balancing is, but I have tools!  Any encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

i think it could be done... but i wouldn't try it. if you have a spare flywheel i'd say give it a shot.

every one i have seen done they take material off of the outside. i don't think it will run if you take material off of the inside.

good luck man.

Check with Dave Moore, he runs flywheel specials. I had mine done for $35!

How can I get a hold of him? I will probably just send it to him, I dont think I will tackle this job myself after all.

I think I will take you up on that offer, If anything, I will take it to a machine shop if I can't do it myself. I would like to at least TRY doing it myself cause I like to do things myself and learn as I go along. pm. me with the details plz.

Since you're a self admitted cheap ass, send it out.

Because you're gonna probably ruin that flywheel, and you're gonna spend 2 to 3 times as much on a new or used one to replace the worthless, albeit lighter, paper weight/ash tray you just created.

Dave Moore actually puts the flywheel on a tapered shaft just like the crankshaft it sits on so you get proper balance and spin.

I can tell you the average machine shop Joe does not do that....

if you clamp the center hub in the lathe, use a center on the other side(where it slides on the crank) and then checkthe center hub with a dail indicator to check if it is centered it will be fine i have did 6 banshee flywheels that way and all turned out fine.

LoL this reminds me of when i used to cut the flywheels on gopeds basically in half with a cut off disc LOL ... we did a hole bunch of ghetto tricks to them... Motors never lasted long the way we had them LOL
