04titanse Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 i just bought some ttoomey t5 pipes with silencers in good shape but have some surface rust on the inside of silencer piping and some on the under side of the pipes. its all pretty minimal and light but i was wondering if there is anyway to re finish these? Could i even sand them down and paint them?? Quote
zach45 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 i used bbq paint and did my black.. few hours with a wire wheel and then light coat of paint.. Quote
ClimbAnyHill Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Don't know how well paint will hold over chrome so I'd say you'd have to remove it before painting. SmkmupBanshee did it, might want to get some info from him. Best finish is to send them out for Ceramic Coating but that's the price of a used set of Chrome T5's. Here's what I did withe my bare metal T5's > http://www.bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72981 Quote
BellicoseBanshee Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Throw up some pictures before you start sanding/blasting/painting. Quote
rubberneck Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Throw up some pictures before you start sanding/blasting/painting. Agreed, My toomeys came on my bike and were pretty neglected. They had quite a bit of surface rust on them and i was ready to blast and paint them. I read a suggestion somewhere to use some 000 steel wool on them. It worked great. Get some 00 or 000 steel wool and some clean solvent and rub them down. My pipes dont look new by any means, but they look way better. It only took me about 45 min to do including removing the pipes. Your pipes sound like they may be in better shape than mine were. Give it a try. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 I can tell you never dull and a very fine scothbrite pad with WD 40 can do wonders to clean up chrome..... Quote

That is exactly what I was going to suggest. Just make sure you use a lubricant while cleaning the rust off. Take your time and let the pad or wool do the work. I think you will be very surprised when you work them for a while. Quote
Snopczynski Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Polish them with Naval Jelly. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Polish them with Naval Jelly. I've tried that...and to be 100% honest, I've had better luck getting the gunk off with very fine scotch brite pads or steel wool and WD40... I've used that in a pinch, though.... Quote
Hulio-mv Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 when you get them cleaned up get some inox and a polishing wheel and work em over that stuff is pretty good Quote
Snopczynski Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 The key is to use the naval jelly with a sos pad or scotchbrite pad. Quote
RadarRacing Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 I'd use the 000 or 00 steel whool and WD40 also. Or get some hoppes gun solvent and 000 wool it'll make em look good just keep up on em with mothers so they dont rerust. It'll look perfect from 10 feet away cleaned up i'll bet. Quote
