I say your bestbet is to take everything apart. Play with the jetting, and rebuild the carbs. Ive never heard a sitiouation like that before!

Mine used to do that with the stock carbs, after I got rid of the TORS. If you have got rid of the TORS, make sure the ends of the throttle cables are setting down in the adjusters, on the carb caps. If one of the cable ends gets pulled out, you won't be able to kick start it, but you can pull start it, and it will rev to the moon.

If it has been sitting for awhile I'm betting your carbs are gummed up. Pull them off, take them completely apart and give them a good cleaning. Get some good carb cleaner and blow out all the orifices. If they are very bad you may have to take them to a shop and vat them overnight.

If it will only pull start then look to make sure the choke tube is in place between the carbs. Also make sure the slides are not in backwards. Then check the distance between your flywheel notches and the pickup coil ( should be 15-20 thousandth) and finally sync those carbs.

Listen, that is a classic case of the TORS "doing their job"! You have a carb hanging up and the reason it revs when you touch the throttle is it disengages the TORS when you are on the thumb throttle. Sounds like a slide is stuck open. Everyone points at the TORS like they are a problem but there is a reason Yamaha installed them. We generally get rid of them but they do work. I doubt your carbs are dirty, your motor is toast, or any on the above. Pull the slides and check the throttle cable. frayed cable is generally causes this.

Good deal, glad you did not pull your crankshaft and inspect the muffler bearings to find it. I would think that when your carb top came loose, it allowed over travel of the slide and it hung up on the alignment pin. Keep them tight and you should be all good.
