typhoon1911 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Hey Everybody, I will be doing a clutch install and the shift star mod shortly (I did it all the time on my 90 Blaster, but so far none on the Banshee). I got the gist of the shift star mods using these instructions, and I read the OEM manual, but I was looking for any tips from the seasoned pros (like soaking the fiber disks before installing them) Or if the Clymers has a better write-up to change the clutch. Thanks for the help!!! Alan Quote
jlsparky7 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Few tips... hmm.... Replace everything the manual tells you too. Have a friend help with torquing the main clutch nut. Use a torque wrench, I think its 52 ft lbs. Thats what it was on my R6 and there the same clutch. Soak the clutch overnite in some good oil before installing just like you mentioned. Make sure you dont get the washer that goes infront and behind the basket confused. Quote
suzuki0702 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 dont lose the ball bearing in front of the push rod in the center of the clutch basket!!!!!! Quote
bansheeboy02 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 dont lose the ball bearing in front of the push rod in the center of the clutch basket!!!!!! I was told by a reputable shop that more than likely a modified star will lead to problems. Don't know from experience. The two washers, one in fromt of the basket and one behind are the same. Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 the best fluid to use is "red". Its a transmission not a crankcase so use red trans oil. I have seen a few hill racers use type-F trans fluid. I use Bel Ray fluid but will be switching to type - F soon. Quote
MILO Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 - be very careful when tightening the spring bolts. they are pretty easy to snap off. make sure you have your torque wrench set correctly and it is accurate, or just go by the feel of it. sometimes you can tell when one is about to snap. -double check your basket for grooves in the fingers, and stress cracks in your basket, inner hub and pressure plate. i had to replace my basket (hinson) but i replaced the hub and p plate with new stockers, they are pretty cheap. - follow the clymer's for installation of the steel plates, they have to be oriented in a staggered pattern. basically your clymer's should walk you through it pretty well.
