Big mystery problem

ok, i've got a big mystery problem. the cylinders aren't gettin gas. well, here's how it all started. last time i rode was late september 2006. put the banshee in the garage so i could start on installin the new lonestar swingarm. went to start it up about a week ago and it took a good amount of kicks to get it started. went to start it 2 days later and it fired up a little easier. went to fire it up 2 days later and got nothing out of it. i did a compression test and both cylinders held at 122 psi. hopefully thats good. i cleaned the carbs 3 times. still nothin. i made sure the gaskets in between the intakes and v-force and cylinders are all good and they are. checked to make sure the reed petals aren't cracked and they aren't. the floats are operating correctly. i'm gettin real good spark and gettin fuel to the carbs but no fuel to the cylinders. i tried to put not even a cap full of gas in the cylinders and it fires up on first kick, i don't know if thats good but after it fires up, it bogs down and shuts off. i turned the choke on and it hits perfectly with no hesitation and will continue to idle perfectly but with the choke off, it hesitates real bad and then shuts off. if i wait till the next day to start it, it won't start at all. i checked the rubber boots on the billet intakes and they don't appear to be torn. however, i didn't empty the gas tank over the winter and the oil more than likely settled at the bottom of the tank and is probably preventing it from starting but it still started on the first day i tried to start it. i got new gas, 93 octane (thats what i've always used), mixed at 40:1 and drained out the old gas, still got nothin even with new gas, but i didn't clean the carbs AGAIN. i hope the crank seals aren't bad. the cylinders aren't ported and the heads aren't milled. someone told me it could be electrical but i don't see that being the case. my next option is to clean the carbs again, then try to start it. i'll order some new gaskets for the v-force and intakes and some new rubber boots for the intakes just to make sure they aren't torn. until then, help would be very much appreciated becuz i have a score to settle with some chump who thinks he's faster than me after he bought new tires when i've bought damn near a whole new rear end suspension and new bearings all around and a new sprocket and i've already smoked him by at least 10 bike lengths on more than one occasion and oh yeah, he has a banshee with all the same mods except he also has his ported, milled and 34 kehin pwk's. my banshee is a real screamer and i'd like to have it that way again but this little mystery problem is really pissin me off. thanks for the help

Pull the pilot jets out of your carbs and clean them. They have real small holes the old gas could have stoped them up.

I agree about the pilots. Check to see that you didn't accidently swap the float bowls. Is the choke tube in place that connects both carbs together. TYhe tube is abouth 3-4" long.

When you use the choke it makes it run richer for a cold start.

If it runs better with the choke then its starving for gas.

Where are your air/fuel mixture screws set at?

And yes take the carb completely apart and clean it all out with carb cleaner. Make sure the jets are all clean.

i haven't had the chance to clean the carbs yet but thats next on my list. i know for a fact that the float bowls are on the right carbs that they should be on. the choke tube is connected. i had a problem with that when i first put my billet intakes and v-force 3 on becuz i didn't even know that tube was there in the first place. took like a day to notice that problem so ever since, i've been makin sure the tube is connected. i'll post a reply with the news and let you guys know the results after i clean the pilots. thanks

You should pull those reeds out and check to make sure you don't have a broken reed petal. This happened on my v-force 2 reeds. One petal on each cylinder was broke. I don't know why. Probally from a backfire or something but that would make it not start. My plugs were wet sometimes and not others though. Maybe not but wouldn't hurt to check.

if you clean the pilots and still no go, before you go buying new rubber for the intakes and such, get it running with the choke and spray some ether or carb cleaner around the intakes and on the choke pull and see if your engine rpm goes up. Thats a good way to check for an air leak

i went to start it today, and i got nothin. kicked it at least 10 times and not a damn thing. i tried your advice but i sprayed carb cleaner directly at the pilots and the rpms went up. i didn't spray it on the choke pull, forgot about that. however, when i put new gas in the tank, i didn't flush out all the old gas after i dumped it out. could that be the reason why the pilots are getting clogged cuz it will idle good at first and when i give it gas, it hesitates at the bottom of the throttle but after the rpms pick up at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it will hit perfect but lags or hesitates at bottom throttle

I'm confused, how can you spray it at the pilots?

Are you setting the gas tank to run or reserve? If you had an oil settling problem or something, it probably would still be at the bottom of the tank and if you put it on run, the tube in the tank that pulls from should be high enough to not suck that oil or whatever build up you have.

If you clean the carbs and it runs good for a while, I'd say something is clogging the carbs up.

Do you know where the pilots are?

I'm guessing it has something to do with your slide position since your tors are removed maybe? Theres a screw you have to drill and tap and put in when you remove the tors. Is that what you're talking about? What size pilot is in the carb and what are all your engine improvements again?

make sure the float valves are moving in and out freely. I just went through this on another quad and it would fire up only with the choke on but once off or any type of throttle applied it would cut off. I cleaned the carbs but the first time I didnt pull the floats out and the needle valve because they looked ok. Turned out the left side was fine but the right side was stuck in the hole not allowing gas to enter or anything. Once out and cleaned, fired right up and had no more problems.
