ive had my flywheel shaved and so has all my buddies. mine got messed up when my shee blew,so now im ordering another. ive had 2 of my buddies come apart. just wondering is it worth it ??? i know it revs faster , but if your to heavy it hurts your torque.i weight about 185.

As long as the lightening is done by a competent person it shouldn't be a problem. As to whether it's a worthwhile mod or not, I have no opinion. I have done it to all of my motors over the past few years and I guess I can't remember what riding one with unmodified flywheel feels like to make a comparison for you. If you trail ride or race MX I would say it's not worth doing.

Do a search in the forums on this topic and you will find a ton of info.

some swear by it and some hate it... i personally wont do it to my bike csue its fine without it...

I tend to do something a little bit different than the normal o.d. that most folks do from what I've seen. It's a mod that I would never pay someone to do, to put it another way.

Some people like, I know it's a cheap mod but souldn't want to take the risk if it was done wrong.

IMO It is not a good mod no matter who does is they never completly balance and that can cause all kinds of problems. Another thing is when you lighten a fly wheel you reduce the tq........on a motor that needs help in that area anyway IMO

I'm mixed up on this one. Dave Moore swears it ADDS Tourque....

I also disagree about using it in trails.

On my stock OEM motor, piped, jetted, Pods, timing at +4....it was absolutely awesome.

T5 pipes have a little hit to them...and this smoothed out the hit because it made the motor rev faster...and get to the meat of the power band quicker.

I recommend it highly....

However, that being said....I had a stock flywheel (ricky stator) on my cub motor last year, and I won't have a shaved one on my 10 mil for this year...because they have plenty of power.

I might play around with a lightened flywheel one day, but...I've got gearing, air pressure, alky ratio and lockup weights to play with to tune in....so, I've got a full plate already....

I think as long as it's done by someone reputable, you'll be fine and you'll actually like it.

My buddy is a hard core 4 stroker....and he rode my 96 before and after the flywheel.

First words out of his mouth when he rode it in trails with a lighter flywheel was wow...it feels easier to ride and sortof more like a four stroke....

well i use to have a pipe and jetted/filter shee, now i have more of a modded shee i.e. drag port, drag pipe and more ........

im useing it more for 300ft drags and a little dunning. mostly balls to the wall !!! i had mine done till shee blew, cant really remember what my old stock felt like--10 years age--

id like to have it shaved again ,but like i said ive seen 2 come apart now. NOT PRETTY !!!!!

thanks for everybodies .02-- probably do it again--- i am looking for a flywheel.

thanks !!!

I'll stand corrected in regards to this mod being applicable to trail riding. The only time that I have trail ridden a Banshee, it had a stock flywheel on it. I was speaking from design theory and not practical application, which is sometimes paramount to talking out my ass.

I would like to emphasize the issue of having the mod done by someone reputable. A lot of attention should be paid to what defines reputable in this case. Balancing of the part needs to happen after this mod is done for sure.

I've run one for several years and have had no issues at all. I had mine done by boonman on here and his work is top notch. My banshee does rev quicker and I can feel a difference...

I've been told that you should not run a lightened flywheel on an engine setup for dragging, for the same reasons mentioned above about the torque factor. I'm going to try that theory out this year, I'm running a stock flywheel on the upcoming drag bike, ran a lightened one last year

Boonman does hellafine work, he did mine about a year or so ago, and I've had no problems.

As for trails, it could go either way I beleive. The engine revs faster with a lighter fly wheel, it also slows down quicker too though(less rortating momentum), which can work against you in trails, sometimes you want to keep the revs up, especially if your switching gears on a hill. I had my 02 lightened, and my 01 is stock, I think it's more fun to ride the lightened wheel out in the open, but if you get into some tight, technical sections, I couldn't keep the revs up as much as I wanted, the bike would slow down quicker.

I ride some tighter stuff, and I'll probably port my bike, so I'm not going to do it on my build.

That is a very fine point, lifted. The trails I rode on my bike were very open and fast....very little tight technical stuff.

I'm too damn old to bounce around ruts, trees....etc.

The UP trails in Michigan and some of the northern loops are like fireroading. Most of them are two car width and 4, 5 and sometimes 6th gear trails.

The little bit of tight stuff I didn't notice it reving down quicker...but then again that's not my cup of tea, so...I didn't spend a lot of time there.

Travis....you and are I no definitely no weight watchers candidates, that's for sure!! :yelrotflmao:

So...I know big boy is building a 4 mil this year, and I'm putting together a 10 mil on alky...

I'm going to pick up an extra flywheel to bring to the track just to shave and put on for shits and giggles once I get the rest of the bike tuned in.

Timers and lights don't lie....

Boonman does good work, I'll vouch for that too.

As does Dave Moore Racing....

Boonman does to goo work from what I have seen as does DMR.

Honestly, there is no way a heavier flywheel is going to add anything, torque or horsepower UNDER THROTTLE, ain't happening. It's just the opposite, it takes more power to accelerate and to maintain the rotating mass. Off throttle, yes, the flywheel will then transfer it's stored energy back to the drive train. Anything our motors have to rotate, chains, sprockets, wheels, tires etc... The heavier they are the more power it takes to turn them and the flywheel is no exception.

The positive side to a normal or heavier flywheel is the ability of the engine to maintain RPM, especially when changing gears. The lighter the flywheel the quicker the drop in RPM when off throttle.
