Can't decide if I should split my cases while its cold. My man at Mr. Crankshaft said there really is no reason to weld unless your really ragging (doing stupid crap) on the bike, and then its not all that effective. I asked what would happen if it failed and he said alot of noise but not likely any unrepairable damage to cases. Any confilicting views on this? Experiences?

From what I have read it depends on what type of MOD's you have. If your pushing some HP then I would say yes get it done but if its mainly stock I wouldnt worry about it until you had to split the case for something else. But what do I know. lol

If you are makinmg much more than 50 hp as a guess I would have it welded. I would wait until you have problem that causes you to atleast pull the top end off though. Splitting the cases just to do that wouldn't be something that I would do. Who is Mr. Crankshaft? :unsure:

are you talking about your banshee or your LT250R?

 

Good insurance on a banshee....and don't kid yourself, I've read of several stock motors with just some pipes causing the crank to separate.

 

If you ask one of the guys on here, he'll tell you if you jump alot you need to have it welded :banghead:

Good idea....good insurance...just "in case shit happens".

 

Hard to say what kind of damage it can cause. Least case, you'll need a new crank, bearings, and possibly save the top end. Could mean pistons, bore...new head/remachine the old head.

 

Crap shoot for sure.

Yeah, the motor's have tollerances and when the bottom end goes to shit on you, those tollerances are pushed to the limit. If something gets too far out of whack, you may end up replacing more than just a crank and bearings..................

 

It is a piece of mind thing................ :thumbsup:

The cases are the easiest to slit on the planet and it cost like 75 bux. It really a no brainer. You do have a brain right?

Well I share a brian with someone, does that count?

 

I have every confidence in this guy. All he does is rebuild cranks for motorcycles and ATV's. Really nice guy who will sit and talk to you on the phone as long as you have questions. He didn't say it a waste to weld, just that it's really not necesary unless, and he mentioned jumping, your really haard on them. He was very specific in the jumping that it's not the jumping really but if you rev in the air and land with it in revving. You know a sudden shock. He said that can separate a crank with just one time.

 

However with what I do, sand drag, trails, and hill climbing. Not really needed. At least not worth tearing down to just do that.

 

I don't know if I'm pushing over 50hp. I doubt it.

Ahh get it welded if you want to. I was on the fence before, but you probably have enough done to warrant it. It's really just a matter of when you want to do it.

 

 

I am not into sharing Brian. I am not sure who Brian is, but I am pretty sure that at no point, ever, in the universe, does a hot girl ever come equipped with the name Brian. :thumbsup:

if you think the webs seperating can`t cause catastrophic failure to your cases. then don`t get the pins welded.ever see how close the webs ride to the case when a crank is true?65 bucks is money well spent if you have the motor apart.i have taken stockers apart with seperated cranks.it `s not pretty.
