In my hunt for some paddle tires I came across a lot of threads about tire size and how important it was to choose the correct size for dragging/hillshooting because of gearing set ups and what gear you will be launching in...Now why is that a critical piece of info???

Ok I kinda figured it out on my own and doing a little reading that, for example, a 2-5 override tranny is consists of gears 2,3,4&5 and that you slam through the gears at full throttle without the clutch but once you come off the gas you have to pull the clutch in at the same time to avoid bending the shift forks and to avoid backload of the tranny(Hope I have the terminology right) Ok my question is why do you line up and launch in second gear? Why don't you start in 1st and go through all the gears?? I don't have an override tranny,,,still the stock trannny with aftermarket clutch basket and plates... Thanks in advance..

depending on your gearing launching in second you can reduce wheel spin and also first gear is "done" and ready to shift into 2nd right as you take off anyways... so to save time and maintain speed you can launch with slightly higher rpms and do the same thing from 2nd... most of the guys with the big motors do this becasue they have the power to rip off the line in s2nd and not have bog...

the tire size will make a differance just as much as your gearing does... i droped my wifes tires from stock yfz450 tires to me 18 inch holeshots when i ranover a nail and popped it.. now that thing has a TON of bottom end becasue the differance in the ratio to turn the wheels...

That pretty much sums it up!

Also, from what I understand, the 2-5's still have first gear, but you'll have to use the clutch when shifting from first to second...but like banshe-eman said, first gear is practically useless when you're pushing some serious HP, and second gear is a bit longer than first and you can gain more speed out of the hole by taking off in second. If you're only running 300 ft or so, or running up a big hill, you only need a few gears to do it with enough power, which is why you'll see a lot of folks running the 2-5.

Cool.....So I should line up in 2nd gear with the way my 05 is currently set up with some 22x11x10 extreme's (Haven't decided on 8 or 10 paddles..) Bike will be a genral duner with me lining up just for the hell of it.

I know 10 paddles may be over kill for just messing around in the dunes but I'm afraid that when I line up that I will just spin and regret not having the extra couple paddles...

I would...that engine should definitely have enough balls to take off in second as long as you're not running ridiculously tall gearing

I'm currently running a 14/41 gearing.

I'm going to have to sort of disagree...boys.

I'll always get a 1-5 override, nuetral down...

Here's a few reasons...It allows you to run MUCH taller gearing, so you can make full use of 5 gears instead of 4.

Also...1st gear is MUCH stronger than 2nd gear, well known.

So...with my 4 mil, I was launching in 2nd (stock tranny and clutch) with 14/42 gearing and it launched very well.

I'm going to launch in 1st with my 10 mil, and I'm going to try 16/42 gearing...which, should let 1st gear be similar to 2nd gear with stock gearing...

I did this for the reasons of stronger gear, one more gear...and no chance of hitting a false nuetral....

Just my .02...

Good points!! I still think when you're only running 300' in a drag race, you won't "technically" need more than 3 gears. The only reason I'm getting a 1-5 neutral down is for when I hit the asphalt strip. Granted, I am speaking from a strict drag racing on a track point of view, where you have a set distance to the finish line; rather than on the dunes, where you might go a little farther to pass someone, or the heighth of the hill varies

I really have no idea what I'm going to run at the track with my 4mil this year. I ran a 14/41 with the stock cylinder setup last year, I'll figure something out

Ya know, you could always fork out the cash for the "unbreakable" second gear, Dave...you got a 10 mil, what's a few more hundred bucks, geeez J/P

Matt,When I was runnng that 'shee with 22-11-10 8 paddle haulers I had no problem with not hooking up and starting in second gear.I know that you being heavier then me will add traction too.I honestly think that you will not like the 10 paddles because when your out duning and climbing a hill at the mountain it's going to wheelie to much for you with the 10's and a +4 swinger.Believe me you'll be able to wheelie at will with 8 paddles.

i dont know man, hes got a bigger motor then my bike has right now and i run 10 pads... i love them... they are imo perfect ... have tons of traction for dragging and enough for those tall loose hills to rip right up them while duning...

AH bouncin boobies,What was I sayin,Oh yeah,

Thats my point. That engine is putting about 90 hp to the ground and with a 10 paddle it will bite to much and with only a +4 swinger he's going to end up on his back side when he's dunning up the mountain.I would actually ride that thing with v-paddles instead of the haulers when I wanted to go dune riding just so I didn't have to worry about wheelien to bad climbing the faces of the hills.

Earlier tonight I was just thinking about the wheelie factor. I forgot about the wheelie factor because I was so worried that the engine would spin 8 paddles and I wouldn't have the traction. Then I started thinking about the fact that my fat ass is heavier than you and figured that would give some extra traction and how my '99 performed with the 8 paddle Sand Sharks. With what you listed above and the other factors factored in I am going to get the 8 paddles. If I really want to point the nose up all I have to do is give a little more gas and dump the clutch or just nail it in a low gear, It's not like a have a wimpy motor. Don't worry kai I never doubted your advise even slightly...you have provided way too much info that has been damn near perfect....At this point if you said a boost bottle would add more HP I would go buy one and put it on.
