Joshtruction Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 well, I had to sell my old shee. I only had it for a few months and ran into some bill situations and had to let it go. I really really want another but I am going to be a daddy soon (hence my bill situation) so I got to thinking.... Right now I can not afford to buy a complete shee. I was thinking buy a frame, and try to peice together cheap or free parts to build a roller. I know in the long run this route might cost more than buying a complete bike, but like this it will do 2 things; keep my motivation up, and not have that one bulk save/spending thing. If I come across 50 bucks try to pick up a stock swing arm etc etc until I am done. On a bright side (and what got me thinking this) is my friend just threw me a free set of YFZ shocks Now, if I do something like this how would I go about making this thing legal so I can register it when I am done? Could I go to my registry and tell them I built it from scratch like a hotrod and get a new title, or do I need a frame with a clean title? Over here if the bike is not registerd and we get caught riding we get in big trouble. Quote
dawarriorman Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Well its going to depend on your state first off, so where are you? Generally though, you can get a salvage title for it. Quote
baddsheee Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 In CA, the Hi-way Patrol says the frame needs a VIN, if it is a custom built frame then they would like a reciept from the manufacturer. Bringing along any reciepts from purchased items would be a bonus. When it is built it goes into inspection. I'm not sure if it has to be running, maybe just a frame with an engine. Quote

BlackBeast Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 You're best bet is to get a frame with a clean title. It will save you a lot of headache in the long run, and you can find them on Ebay all the time. If they guy you're getting the frame from actually had a title and lost it, all he has to do is apply for a duplicate title through the DMV. It's usually only about $20. Otherwise, get a notorized bill of sale for the frame. You'll have to contact your DMV and have them run a title search to make sure it's not stolen (probably a good idea to do this before you buy it, or at least before you start building it). If you buy it from someone out-of-state, you'll probably have to do a title search in that state as well. Contact your state DMV, or go online and look up the procedures on how to "Bond for a title" in your state. You'll basically have to pay to get a bond for the title, which is sort of like buying insurance that guarantees the DMV that it isn't stolen. It'll probably run about $100 to get it bonded, and the DMV will give you a thick stack of paperwork that you'll have to fill out to go along with it. Like I said, your best bet is just to get a frame with a clean title. Quote

Im going trough this with my bike cause I replaced a broken engine case and bent frame ( along with a few other minor parts) I pretty much have to take it to CHP and have them inspect the bike-in complete running order, no partial bike- show them bills of sale for all parts, and approximate value of finished bike, then CHP will assign a VIN to my frame( it had no vin when I got it) then I should be able to register my bike.
