banshee04le Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Stingrays aren't dangerous though. Hell, they'll let you hold them. That was just a freak accident. Kind of ironic that he's messed with huge crocs, deadly snakes, and yet a stingray gets a (un)lucky shot and kills him. I'm not 100% positive, but I think it is the mante ray that is fairly docile. I don't think you want to try to hold a stingray. Unbelieveably sad news. His enthusiasm and love of Gods great diversity of life will live on in the hearts and minds of his fans, of which I am one. Manta rays are docile, but so are stingrays. I've been swimming with them in the caymans. hundreds of them all around, and they'd let you hold them, pet them, turn them over and everything. As long as youare gentle and don't step on them, they won't sting you. Edited September 5, 2006 by dawarriorman Quote
Ducman Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 So sad. He was so incredibly entusiatic about showing his love and excitement for wildlife to the rest of the world. Ironically this accident is like a race car driver getting killed in a airplane crash. Quote

Animalman294 Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 At least his son and wife have a lot of video, to remember the man by. Thats one thing I wish I had of my relatives instead of the still pictures. Then they will see him how he was and never forget. It is sad and the ray is a docile creature unless they feel threatened and then they bring the tail up. He probably would have only been hurt if the barb would have hit his leg or arm or what ever. People step on sting rays all the time and don't die, but it leaves a nasty hole and poison that stings like you wouldn't believe. But because the barb was so close to the heart, he didn't have a chance............... RIP man, you'll be missed, and thanks for knowledge and entertainment............ Quote
[email protected] Posted September 5, 2006 Author Report Posted September 5, 2006 yeah they got video of him dangling his son over a alligator...... Then again why point out the negatives ...... He did more good then any of the animal scientist in tv history. Quote
Animalman294 Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 I saw that video coverage again this morning on the today show and he is holding his son on his hip opposite the croc and fed the croc food from the other hand. Plus he had multiple handlers around him, the croc would have got him first and he would have had to throw (for lack of a better word) his son clear. Plus the croc had his head raised looking at the meat in Steve's hand, they usually have their heads down low to the ground when they are going to charge and attack. Don't get me wrong its a situation that I wouldn't have put my child in, but then again he also had a passion for what he did like no other, which doesn't always leave room for thinking things through. Plus it got him a lot of publicity for his cause (public awareness)........ Quote
gipperz Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Thats to bad, I feel for his wife and children, at least he enjoyed what he did for a living. RIP Quote
