ToomeySheeLE Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Hey there everyone, Just got off the phone with a guy whos trying to sell a 1987 banshee motor, he's asking 350$ and it needs a new top end and crank bearing.. so he's certianly asking enough in my opinion. He advertised it saying fastest banshee motor made.. he told me on the phone that the 87 motors had less restrictions and alot of little things that made them faster than all other years, he also said that they came with bigger carbs(which he sold) this made me wonder, did they really? I was thinking "i dont think so" the whole time he was telling me this.. So my question is, was there any difference between the 87 motors and the motors made after? Thanks Quote
bansheeseat$$ Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 The only difference that I know of is that the 87's had 13/42 gearing and weighed 9 pounds lighter.THe gearing would make them quicker(not faster) and and the 9 pounds lighter would help that to.I could be wrong though. Quote
RNBRAD Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 I've heard the same thing. I've never heard exactly what made them faster though. Quote
ba7raini Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 im not an expert or anything but wouldnt restrictions be in the pipes mainly? Quote
Animalman294 Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 My question is what are the restrictions, EPA regs, of the restrictions as said above for air flow. BAck then there wasn't too much concern about off road or two stroke smog emmissions. The weight difference could be as little as changing what some components were made out of, and the gearing was different. I thought the motor was the same all through the years, which is why the Banshee had such a long run. The difference is so small I don't think it would be that noticeable unless you rode two of them side by side (one at a time, of course). Tell the guy you want the idiot discount and offer him $300................ :yelrotflmao: Quote
endofitall9 Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 I've heard the same thing about the 87's hauling ass, I don't think it would be true nothing major on the motor has been changed since it came out, I think it's just the guys in 87 wasn't ever used to having something that fast around IMO....... PhilMoore Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Everyone thinks the '87's are faster because it was the first year and nobody could believe Yamaha would produce a quad that was so fuckin awesome! The power difference might be something as simple as a degree on the stator plate, or a thinner head gasket? phx450 Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Is this motor bone stock? Nobody has a stock banshee motor now days. Its all what you put into it, tuning, etc. Carbs, Pipes, Fuel all big factors. Example. Your bone stock 87 against a piped and open carb 90 would get smoked in a race. Quote
