01bansheefox Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 I am building a 4x4 truck and i think im just gonna pull the 350 out and beef that up but I was wondering what stuff I should use for 4x4 not street. There any online sites?? Should i use the 350 or drop in a 454?? I tried looking online but only found books that i have to buy. Quote
Big Blue Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 A good way to go about building the 350 the way you want is to look at some components on some crate motors and copy what they have used. Putting a big block in is a waste IMO why add the extra weight when you dont need to. Quote
BANSHEEMANIA Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 I had a 1 ton 4 wheel drive chevy with a 350 in it. When it dropped a valve I put in a 454. The 350 actually ran just as good if not better than the 1978 smog 454 I put in. Big blocks rule, but they aren't anything to shout about unless it's a pre 1971 motor, or it has been built some. The most important thing for a truck motor is don't over cam it. A big cam sounds cool, but it doesn't put out the power untill higher rpms', and thats not what you want in a 4wheel drive. And make sure you match up your carb and intake also. A dual plain low rise intake, with about a 650cfm carb should do it. Most cam companys have a special 4x4 series cam kit. I know comp cams has them. It's really the same as building a street motor, except you want all of your components designed to make power down low. Around here a 454 that runs goes for $700-$1000, and its usually worn out. I would stick with the 350 if it's not worn out. I could go on forever. Just make sure everything is designed to work together in say the 1500 to 4000 rpm range. Quote
bansheerage Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 theres a whole lot of things that can also factor into what your doing!!! like what kind of truck do you plan on putting this 350 in? and what kind of 4x4ing are you going to be doing? mudding? rock crawling? are you going to put big tires meaning 35" and over. well i could help you out a bit just need to know a bit more details. whatever you do i knwo your goign to need an offroad carb. hope this helps. MudSlinger09 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 well dont just worry bout the motor , thats a big factor but gearing your shit down too will make a difference - some clutch work could be nescessary too if you dope out your motor... idk when i was buildin my lil trx 300 4x4 into a mudder i woulda much rather ran lower gears to spin 28x12.5 outlaw tires..... but instead i just had a thumper big bore kit and was relying on plain ol power Quote
munkenaround Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 Keep the 350 cuz you can buy parts just about anywhere. I'd throw a 400 crank in it (383 stroker) torque is what you will really appreciate. Quote
BigRed350x Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 I have an old 1970's ford f-700 with a 454 or 460 or whatever size ford makes that's up over 400ci. I've always wanted to yank it out and put it in my old ranch ford f-150 and make it a trail rig. That or do a hybrid and stick it in my GMC1500 Z71. Oh, and the engine was rebuilt about a year ago and its done nothing but sit out in a field. LOL Quote
bansheefreak Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 i would rebiuld the 350 .. it will rev faster and be just as fast as a 454.. 454 revs slower but has more torque not needed for mud plus the weight... go with a small block i say!!!! Quote
01bansheefox Posted August 28, 2006 Author Report Posted August 28, 2006 Its going in a 1989 chevy C2500 with 1 ton running gear and were going to straight axle conversion it. It is strickly mud use only, its going to run probably 40''+ boggers. I was told I want alot of hp and torq, and it would cost 2x as much to get the numbers from a smallblock than it would a big block. And the weight differnece is only 300lbs. Quote
gipperz Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 I'm a small block chevy guy, built my fair share of motors. I would really suggest picking up a couple of books. My favorite is a guy by the name of David Vizard. Horespower vol.1, 2, 3. Vol. 1 really touches base on combinations, thats really the key to building power and using it with the proper gearing. You want a good match with intake ,carb, heads and camshaft. Another book by the late John Lingenfelter is a good bible to. These guys build real usable power. David Vizard has quite a selection for good reading, Both John and David have there engine combinations in the back of there books with real dyno charts. If your interested we can talk more. Don't want to bore anybody with this stuff. Quote
racer Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Keep the 350 cuz you can buy parts just about anywhere. that not joke. you cant piss in a junkyard with out hitting some SBC parts. Quote
