Moths are attracted to light, or more specifically, are known to circle bright objects. People really are not sure why they have this behavior and it is not known what causes it. Some people believe that moths navigate by maintaining a constant angular relationship to a bright celestial light like the moon, but when they encounter a brighter artificial light nearer to them than the celestial body they will navigate towards that. So when they maintain this constant angle to the light, they fly in a spiral patern until they hit the light source.
