87banshee_rider Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 i just finished putting my cases back together and and putting my new top end in. i did the leak down test which was good and compression test and it showed that i had 150 pounds in each cylinder. so i put everything together and i started filling up the anti freeze and then it started leaking out where the head gasket is. i looked inside the cylinders and are pretty sure theres no antifreeze inside the motor but i cant get it to seal the anti freeze from leaking to the outside. the gasket i got was a regular paper gasket but it had a metal ring put around the edges around the pistons and im thinking the metal sealed enough to keep the anti freeze out but the paper part of the gasket wasnt tight enough so it would leak outside the cylinders. sorry bout the novel i wrote but im just tryin to explain the best i could. any ideas on how to check if theres anti freeze inside the cylinder? and is there any way to get it to seal up so i dont have to take the head off or am i just missing something really dumb? banshdog Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 Things that come to mind..... Did you tighten the head down in the correct order? Did you tighten the nuts in incriments? Did you tighten them to the correct torque spec (20lbs)? Is the head a stock piece? has it been milled? I have never used a paper filter, used Cometic metal gaskets with no problems. Keep us updated, good luck. Quote
Rustbag Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 Most likely a warped head. Get it milled like 87 said. Get the metal gasket. Paper head gaskets don't make since to me. Quote
87banshee_rider Posted June 2, 2006 Author Report Posted June 2, 2006 Most likely a warped head. Get it milled like 87 said. Get the metal gasket. Paper head gaskets don't make since to me. my head just got back from getting milled so i dont think its warped. but i got it working though but they sent this gasket and i asked a mechanic and he said i shouldnt have to put any glue or anything but i phoned the place that i got the gaskets from and they said that these are different gaskets and that they require glue becuase there's no sealant spray on them like other gaskets have i guess. but thanks for the other ideas. i checked all that stuff out and decided to phone the guy. Justintoxicated Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 glue? man I hope that is some high temp glue... I have never heard of anything like that before. Adding glue seems like it could fuck up your squish, did you jsut have the head milled or did you have the squish adjusted as well? I would have just said fuck it and got a yamaha gasket, since you have to replace the gasket every time you remove the head anyways, why buy another generic piece of shit that leaks? Glue does not make any sense to me though, how the hell do you plan to remove the head in the future if it is glued on there? How do you know your getting the proper squish after you add glue? Quote
Rustbag Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 glue?, paper head gaskets? throw that crap away and get a regular head gasket. Quote
87banshee_rider Posted June 3, 2006 Author Report Posted June 3, 2006 glue?, paper head gaskets? throw that crap away and get a regular head gasket. sorry about that, its not glue its called gasket sealer or gasket dressing or something like that Quote
IRONDOG Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Ditch the paper gasket- what brand was it anyway? Where did you get it? Lots of liguid cooled bikes in the past used paper gaskets without problems but I've never seen anything but steel shim gaskets for Banshees (other than "o"rings). Quote
