Handyman Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 (edited) For some of you here you may remember me with all my Banshee problems. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about......I bought a 99 banshee froma good friend and it was in tip top condition. Didn't know he installed new handle bars and connected the TORS wiring under the tank. Bike would idle but would not accelerate. Removed TORS and have had jetting probs ever since. I installed new pistons and bored it to the 2nd over size from stock due to low compression. I have read all info on this website that it has to offer and nothing seems to "CURE" the problem 100%. Specs: Stock carbs Main jet: 340 All other jetting: stock Needle: Stock, in 4th clip pos. Bored to 2nd over size Wiseco pistons K&N filter pods Pro Circuit Platinum pipes with T304 silencers TORS removal kit Elev: 250ft above seal level(acording to GPS) Temp. below 60 Here is what the bike is doing. it idles fine but the left side seems to be weaker than the right at the exaust. When I take it down the street the left side will not "come to life" until half way through 1st gear and about 3/4 into the throttle and then it fires fine. I removed the stock needles and installed the needles I got with my Dynajet stage 3 jet kit. I set the clip pos in the 3rd pos and left side was worse. I then set the clip to the 4th pos and it ran better but not by much. With every adjustment I have made the problem will not go away. I'm desperate to get this thing to run. I work with a bunch of people who ride and have asked me every weekend to go ride but I have to decline because this thing is not running correctly and I'm afraid of killing the engine because it's not running correctly. Here are some questions... 1. what will happen if I adjust just the left side carb to get it to work? 2.Do I need to adjust both carbs to keep from hurting the engine? 3. Can the reeds be the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated Edited December 18, 2005 by Handyman Quote
ogre03 Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 I was thinking reeds while I was reading your post before I even got to that part. I'd check those out first. Pull the cages hold the them up to a light look for any cracks in the reeds, look to see if they are sealing around the edges, you can try flipping them over to get a better seal. I'd start there, see if that helps. Also check for air leaks on the left side too. Fire it up, and spray some starting fluid around the intakes and carbs to see if it revs up. Quote
midnite Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 The coil could be bad. Try switching the spark plug wires {r to l, l to r} and see if the problem switches sides {this will not hurt your motor since the coil fires both plugs at the same time on every stroke}. Sometimes the plug wire caps go bad so try new caps. You probily already did, but did you disconnect the little black tors box from the harness. It's located above the left cylinder on the frame. You could have an air leak ogre03 said. It kinda sounds electrical to me. When you get her running right get some #30 pilots, and go 1 1/2 turns out on the air screws. I have pc plats and they like alot of pilot jet. Quote
wayfst Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 ditto, strong advice, let us know. Quote
banshee tuner Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 I was also thinking reeds, I just had the same problem. One side would not put out much exhaust and would come alive on top end. If swapping the reeds from one cylinder to the other does not work swap the coil wires. Another thing that can be overlooked is the spark plug tops can unscrew, that is why some people run solid top plugs. Quote
rocketboy Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 the above is great advise ,also check that the carb slides rise and fall equally and theyre are in perfect harmony ,dont get the nutty idea of putting a bigger main in only one of the carbs ,also 340mains sounds rich to me for your mods ,but in california at that elevation its possible. Handyman Posted December 18, 2005 Author Report Posted December 18, 2005 Thanks for all the advise. I have tried swapping the wires and the problem never moved from one side to the other. I'll more than likely focus on the reeds for the next step in trouble shooting this problem this week. Thanks again. Quote
