Hi everyone I am new to this site. I just purchased a 1990 Banshee for $1400 on saturday. The bike seems to be sputtering when I ride, I am not sure if its the carbs or an electrical problem????????? Also the Upper A-Arms are kinda loose but dont seem to be tightening, should they be replaced ????

( Can U Guys Pleeaassee Help Me With This Problem B/C I Am Ready To Ride )

I have FMF Fatty Pipes with Power Core Silencers. The bike has the Air Box Lid on, with a Uni Air Filter. The carbs have been jetted also. The guy I bought it from said he installed racing carbs on the bike. I dont know what the needle settings are.

I though it was the Stator making it sputter but I am not sure, I need your help????

racing carbs you need to pull the number off them or letter like keihin or mikunki (spelling)

if they are stock i would suggest a 280-300 main depend on your elevation

does it run like crap at what throttle position.

Also try changing the spark plugs. Technically speaking you'll need to get a few sets anyhow to dial in your jetting but go ahead and change them out beforehand...so you'll have a "starting point". I agree with wes on the jetting recommendations he made; given they are stock carbs. I would lean more towards a jetting issue rather than electrical at this point. Also be sure that your air filter is clean when you jet the carbs, don't want to tune it for a dirty filter. Don't always take someone's word that the bike is "jetted"; for all you know they could have just slapped some bigger jets in there and called it jetted...not saying this is the case but very well could be :shrugani:

Pull your plugs out and let us know what they look like, or better yet, take a pic so we can help you tune this booger :P

The "slack" in your a-arms probably indicates that the bushings need to be replaced. They're pretty cheap and easy to change.

Ok I changed the spark plugs with some brand new NGK plugs, cleaned air filter and it still sputtered. The bike only sputtered at low RPM's, but when it is sputtering and I gun it the bike will pick up proper speed and stop sputtering. When I first hop on it and take off its sputters like crazy especially when I am just crusing. After riding it for a couple of hours yesterday with it acting crazy, the sputtering stoped, but as soon as I turned the bike off and let it sit for like 2hrs and try to ride it the sputtering would come right back. The bike starts on the first or second kick no problem. I took the bike to a local bike Mechanic today, he is goin to clean the carbs out and adjust them for me. I will go with the 300 main jet. I know you guys are experts with this bikes, so I am taking your full advice. Do you guys think I should change the Stator on the bike?????? I will let you know how the bike is ASAP.

( If You have more advice on solving the problem PLEASE LET ME KNOW )

Thank Guyz

Before you start buying jets to tune it you need to find out what's in there first. 2 strokes do kinda sound like they're "sputtering" a little at part throttle before the powerband kicks in, to me it sounds like you're just a tad rich from what you're describing. I wouldn't tell the mechanic to just slap a 300 main jet in there; you'll probably want to tell him what it's doing and tell him you think it's running rich. A good "general" rule to go by is sputtering = rich / bogging = lean. Depending on where the sputter or bog is on the throttle determines what aspect of the jetting you need to change. Idle/part throttle is your pilot jet. Mid throttle would be a needle adjustment. Full throttle would be your main jet. What premix are you running at what ratio?

If your stator was the problem, I think it would be doing more than just sputtering....probably would not start or have trouble starting and then run like crap...lol

;) yeah i would play with that pilot for sure... dont change your mains if its ok at WOT your in a diff area of your carb.... find out if those carbs are stock or what... dunno what RACING CARBS mean...

The Bike start fine but it Sputters as I am trying to pick up speed but when the power band kicks in it clears up. I will let the mechanic now about running it Rich. The Mechanic said he thinks its a bad connection somewhere, and he also is goin to adjust the carbs.

when you get this worked out make sure you post it here in this thread so we all can learn from it! I have the same problem in 4th-5th-6th just before the band and have tried moving my needles, air screws out 2, nothing seemed to help so i went to changing jets went from a 280 with dg pipes and open and drilled box to 300 but haven't had a chance to test yet.the 280 has got to be lean with my mods just can't find the sputtering problem plugs and are dark brown???

Hey Guys I Figured Out The Sputtering Problem. My wires were corrided and the coil wire had been cut. My carbs were not adjusted properly either. After having the whole bikes wires cleaned and re-wired properly, the carbs ajusted and cleaned out the bike ran like a Champ. Also I had 87 octane gas in the bike, which was a NO NO and I drained that out and went with a 93 octane gas which is better.

damn it i was going to say u might of had bad gas but i didnt wanna look like a jack ass with everyone else talking about jetting and shit + i was going to ask what kinda oil u was using becouse the cheap shit will gum up in your carb cuasing it to act funny.. and a dirty air filter it would run ok at crusin speed but when you got on it it would die out..
