machz05 Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 I have a 1998 Banshee with Toomey pipes, Cool Head, and Vito's Power Pistons that were just put in. It has stock bore and stock porting on the cylinders. Out of no where one day I started it up and it started smoking really bad out of one cylinder (right). I ran a compression test and both seem fine at 145 (right) and 142 (left). I took both carbs apart and cleaned them, unhooked my T.O.R.S, and checked my reed valves and still it smokes. I noticed my transmission oil to be a little low and I was wondering if I could have an internal leak to where I am burning that oil? The left plug has a nice brown color but the right is black. Anyone have any suggestions!! Quote
banshee76179 Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Could be the carb boot has a hole in it or a air leak somewhere. Do a leak down test. What kind of oil do U use on ur premix and what ratio? Quote
machz05 Posted August 31, 2005 Author Report Posted August 31, 2005 I am running Klotz oil at 40:1 mix. I have Uni filter two -one airfilter on it and I guess I could check the reed boots but wouldn't that make me run lean? Quote
banshee76179 Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 yes it would! When I used to run 32:1/Klotz of course, mine would smoke out of one pipe even a Lil' oil would come out.. So, I bumped the mixture to 40:1 and rejetted and everything went fine.. I would do a WOT plug check to see if ur jetting is correct.. Quote
sheefreak Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) Can almost guarentee it is your right side crank seal. When mine went it was sucking tranny oil so bad, you could put your hand under the right side silencer and get literally sprayed w/oil. Yours may not be that bad, but can pretty much guarentee that is your problem. A leakdown test would indicate that as a possibility, a compression test would not. If you hadn't have said that it's loosing tranny oil I would have said check your jetting. Quote

machz05 Posted August 31, 2005 Author Report Posted August 31, 2005 Which crank seal is it or is there only one? I had to replace a shift fork about a year ago so the entire engine was apart. Do I have to split the cases again or is there another way? Quote
bobbybonilla Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Ive ridden 3 different banshees and all 3 smoked more outta one pipe? Especially when first started. One of them was even a 2005? Im pretty sure its normal as long as there isnt too much difference between each pipe. Quote
brugal Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 You may have blown one of the O rings in your cool head.. Quote
machz05 Posted September 1, 2005 Author Report Posted September 1, 2005 It is quite a bit of smoke and it smells funky. I removed my cool head and tried the stock one and it did the same thing so it isn't coolant. As much as I don't want to admit it I'm thinking it is the crank seal. What a project!! Quote
AllMotor347 Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Sorry to say it but you got a crank seal to change, I just had to do mine, split the case and make sure to have some fun while your at it Quote
98bonerSTOCKshee Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 I always found it difficult to light 2 pipes, I prefer a bong!! I been holding back for 2 days now, just had to do it sorry... Quote

And of course your bike will start running really shitty. The fact that makes me confident is he's losing tranny fluid, and its the right side(the only side that could possibly be sucking tranny fluid), thats quite a coincidence to not be the crank seal. Machz05, have you held your hand behind the exaust? Is it discharging oil? I'm not just talking some moisture, but spraying oil. Quote
IRONDOG Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 You will have to split the cases to change the seal. Use only genuine Yamaha seals, they are superior to the cheap K&S seals you see all over eBay. You did put some grease on the seal lips when you assembled it, right? Jerry Quote
