The more I look into these the more I want one. Does anyone know a good site that kinda gives you the breakdown of different types/upgrades/what to look for...

I would like something pretty fast that wouild be street legal but could take it offroad too.

...Maybe led will chime in and lend me a hand. :D

if thats the case, you may be happier with a prerunner. its hard to get A/C into a 'rail. :)

Really depends on what you look for in the buggy & how much you're willing to spend. Right now, the long-travel, 4seater setups seem to be hot, as well as the prices. A good friend of mine builds, sells & upgrades rails, see: http://www.johnsonsbuggies.com for more info there. I'm still pimp'n the older style VW powered rail, it's an 1835cc stroked & modded to a 1968cc stroker, got probably around 3g's into the motor itself. Total, we probably got maybe 8k invested in our rail, it's nothing special, but it's a blast to drive & really isn't shit to maintain & fix if it breaks. I'm running a low-geared VW bus transaxle for the lower gearing & strength, there's also mid-range & 091 high geared transaxles...but there getting to be few & far between, of course you can always spend 1k+ on a build up one for what you're looking for.. Our rail is mainly built to wheelie & trail ride, not really much for jumping, hell I don't even run shocks on the front! :P As far as street legalling a rail...check with your DMV or state's website for info on what all you'd need to do, most likely just the norm...lights, turnsignals, mirrors, horn, etc. If I had the money, I'd have someone, probably Johnson since he's a good friend, build a custom long-travel 2 seater rail in the 20-25k range, with a shortstar V6 caddy motor, with badass suspension, that'd be great for wheelies & jumping both.

You can checkout my old site to checkout some of the rails in my immediate family...some other sites you can check out: http://www.dunebuggy.com or just do a google search for dunebuggy or sandrail or sandcar, etc...

I guess I'll take my time on this one -seems like another beast that the skys the limit on what you can put into these things and the Banshee is usually waiting first in line when I get alittle spending money. <_<
