Hi all, I am new to the forums and am having a few problems with my 02 banshee. I''ve had the 'shee for about 3 months, and it was running fine until a few days ago (after my uncle rode it) He was kept shifting gears without even letting them wind all the way out, not even CLOSE. Now i cannot get it to kickstart at all, the only way I can get it to start is to pull-start it. When it does start, it is sputtering and occasionally backfiring out of the rightside exhaust, and never will run right. And unless you keep ALOT of gas on it, it will die. Any suggestions on what this might be? I appreciate the help.

wont kick over, or will just not start with the kickstart? did you pull the plugs? any metal bits on the insulator? how does the compression feel? could also check the reeds and make sure they are not broken.

it just won't start with the kickstart... i'm hoping it's just the plugs... what's ironic is the left side plug seemed carboned up, but the right side looks fine. (these plugs were just put in a few weeks before my uncle rode it) i'm really a newb to ATV's in general... so i'm still learning on this whole maintenance thing. Is there a write-up somewhere i can look at on how to properly clean the carbs, etc.? Also, i'm gonna sound like a reall noob for sayin this one, but how do i check the reeds?

exactly what i was thinking. change the plugs, then do some low-mid throttle jetting to keep it from happening again.

I would put some new plugs in there, if that doesnt work pull both the carbs off then you can take off the reed cages to check the reeds. Heres a good jetting and carb site Jetting FAQ.

THANKS! :notworthy:

I appreciate everyone's suggestions! Unfortunately I cannot find anywhere that sells the plugs except for my local atv dealer, and they are not opened until tuesday. I will try the plugs first, then check the reeds. thanks Banshee~ for the pic!/ write up site!

Any auto parts store will probably have them. I know Autozone has BR8ES plugs....they were like 1.35 each!

well today we installed new plugs and this wasn't the problem. it STILL will not kick start, and we pull-started it today with my jeep, and it still sputtered and missed out down the road. once you get it into 3rd gear it seems to do fine, but 1-2nd is terrible and when you stop it immediately dies. any other suggestions?

As mentioned above, if it's not your plugs then try checking your reeds.

Quote: "but how do i check the reeds?" ... You need to remove the carbs and then each reed cage is held on with 4 socket head capscrews (allen head bolts). Take out the cages and look for any of the following: Reed petals not closed against the cage, broken reeds, cracks/ chips, distortion, or even a bit of dirt or something else stuck between the petals and the cage.

whats the dif between br7es and br8es

BR7s are a 'hotter' plug than a BR8 which means they reach their ideal working temperature at a lower temperature in the combustion chamber. Only use that type of plug if the motor never runs at high loads or high temperatures. (unlikely 'cos it's a 'Shee!). ... Using a hotter plug in the wrong conditions can lead to overheating and preignition.

Rare.

My firend had a similar problem with his shee. It kept poping out the right side and when you pulled in the clutch it would die. We could kick start it though but took forever. Turned out that the slide in the right carb was stuck open. We cleaned both carbs and now it runs fine. If the slide is stuck open, as soon as you touch the throttle it will rev very high.
