chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Quick question before I put this engine back in the chassis. What do you guys think the MAX piston to cylinder clearance should be before boring? Im at .035 now. Thanks. Quote
Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I can't answer your question, but it will also depend on what type of pistons you're using. The Clymer states 0.0024" - 0.0026" for clearance. My 0.040 Prolites stated "Clear 0.0030". That seems like a lot of clearance you've got . Measured right or did you mean 0.0035"? Rare. Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 I forgot a zero. My bad. Anyway, it sounds like .0035 may still be too much... Quote
fast87 Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 my old set of jugs and pro lites had .0040" clearance, that's borderline..my new set is like brand new, but isn't really needed, with the cost of boring then a new top end kit, i woulden't od it, run yours the way they are and i highly doubt you'll crack a skirt, how old is the top end?? ~Mark~ Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Its .020 over on a one year old bore. Prolite pistons, new rings, bearings, etc. Quote
bansheefreestyler Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 how do you know the bore before you put new pistons in if your the second owner? a vernier? Quote
bigboybanshee Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 200 bucks now (for pistons and bore) while it's still apart or 200 bucks 6 months later and the fun of tearing it apart again as well as possibly sustaining more damage if you do break a piston skirt. You'd be much better off with a fresh top end...just my .02 Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 i just used the piston in the cylinder, no rings, and a feeler guage. Its not the most accurate, but its close. I dont have a good set of calipers. Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Probably a good idea to bore it. Ive been wanting porting done on these jugs anyway. Good excuse. Thanks!! Quote
Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Where I said "0.0030 Clear" earlier in reference to the Prolites, I assume that's Wiseco's instructions for boring (on the box), not wear limits. ... Sorry, I should have made that clearer. Rare. Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 so i wonder if .0035 is acceptable? Wheres Jim from Passion when you need him??? Quote
Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I would think so, as that's only half a thou'. (0.0005"). ... I'm not too sure about your measuring techniques though! . Rare. Quote
chapmanmd Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Hey, at least I didnt put it in Millimeters!!! Quote
fast87 Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 bigboybanshee-where do you get a bore job and pistons for 200 bucks??? it costs me 100 about anywhere for boring, then top end kit(pro-lites) are 150-160...you must be getting a good deal or sumthin.. ~Mark~ Quote
