moookie132 Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 My buddies Banshee heard a claking sounds when we were dragging, and after that the kick starter is stuck. It wont push down and turn the engine over. we have tried about of pounds of pressure on it and it is stuck... ir can his engine took a crap? anyone know? Quote
eehsnab2 Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 did it just stop running while dragging it? Was it running the best it ever ran just prior to when it made the sound? Notice any smell when you shut it down? Quote
Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 Sounds like a piston's busted up and pieces of it have jammed under the crank. Rare. Quote
eehsnab2 Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 you might pop off the head and take a looky lue... Quote
chris642 Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 same exact thing happened to me with my cr, i heard clanking sounds and couldnt get it to start. my guiness says borrow a rope and pull start it, i actually got it to run for like a minute then it just pissed out and locked up. lucky for me no damage was done except a shattared piston skirt, the crank was untouched so i flodded the crank case with gas, drained it, and got the remaining particles with a tweaser. with a banshee you might want to open it up though, especially since it only cost me 70 bucks for the piston and gaskets and thats all you need for a new top end on a dirtbike. Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 ... my guiness says borrow a rope and pull start it ... 385525[/snapback] That sounds like a recipe for disaster. ... Assuming a piston has let go. ... If the rod bearings (and crank bearings) haven't allready been contaminated with parts from the piston, they sure will from trying to tow-start it. There would also be a risk of busting something through the case. Head and cylinders need to come off. Rare. Quote
Timmy301 Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 If your pistons are fine you need to dig deeper and check the gears.assuming you were drag racing and slamming gears one may have broke and there can be little pieces getting stuck in all the wrong places. Quote

80overShee Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Might have locked up the kicker gear or idler gear. The kicker should atleast move 1/4 turn even if the crank is locked up. If you pull the plugs and try to roll it while in gear, will the bike move and/or engine rotate? If so, its probably not a piston/rod/crank/bearing. Pull your clutch cover off and see if maybe you broke a gear tooth and it is wedged into the kicker or idler gear. Something as simple as putting the countershaft sprocket nut on backwards after puttin on the sprocket can cause BIG problems inside the clutch area....The genius that owned mine before me did it and it cost me about $400 to fix everything. I noticed yesterday that my friends Banshee had a 'loose' sprocket, he had his nut on backwards and I could feel the slop in the shaft and the spring on his kicker had already come out of its keeper slot. He didn't understand why his sprocket kept coming off. Now he has to tear open the clutch cover, fix the kicker and hunt inside for the snap-ring that holds the idler gear on. It comes off immediately and that little piece is exactly what tore my Shee a new one. Quote
moookie132 Posted June 27, 2005 Author Report Posted June 27, 2005 Thanks for all the help... the kicker does not move a centimeter it is just stuck. It cant be pushed started so it might be the piston. He claims he heard a clacking sound then the motor turned off immidiately. the gears do run fine I can shift through them. just can not turn the engine over with the kick start or push start. Quote
. Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 your definitely gonna have to pull the top end off, but pull the stator off while its in neutral and try wiggling it back and forth and try to free up the crank. If you cant, try taking the top end off and doing it again. I dont recommend it, but if your buddy doesnt want to dump a penny more than he has to into it, you could flush out the bottom end with kerosene if you get the crank free. I'd do it at least 2 or 3 times (your gonna have to pull the engine anyway, its a ton easier) Look real good with a flashlight and make sure you get everything out and put it back together. 250 bucks at a minimum to get her back running again. (maybe a little less depending on what boring costs) Quote
whiteboarder Posted June 29, 2005 Report Posted June 29, 2005 this could be several things me and my friends have had this happen to us a couple times it could either be the kickstarter gear spring mechanism, a wrist pin on the piston could have poped out and its wedged under the crank, blown topend or you could have a woodruff key on the flywheel that sheared these are all things that has caused this to me and my friends Quote
