Animalman294 Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 (edited) Right now I have my timing set at +4 with only pipes and a K&N. I don't think that I am going to have enough time to put on any of my newly purchased mods. I need to find out if I can advance the timing without hurting anything. I mean do I need to mix 50/50 Av gas w/ premium, or will the advanced timing be ok. Or do I need to check the jetting? I am going to Sand Mountain NV this weekend @ 4000', and live at about 1000'. I mean I know in a car you can advance the timing and and not have any negative effects on the rest of the motor or put it in any danger of burning the rings or pistons. Sorry for all the questions, but I am still in the learning curve for my Banshee............, but I do appreciate the responses. Or should I take it back to stock timing "0" until I can put the rest of the mods on and check the plugs at that time? Edited May 23, 2005 by Animalman294 Quote
NEVER SATISFIED Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 i'd say leave it at the +4 till you get the rest of her done. then slap it up to +6 and .. then reattach your arms when you stop... lol... i just put mine at +6 thisweekend and im runnin a 16 front tooth, at a stand still i put it in 4th gear and dropped the clutch like if i were racing a drag and the damn thing spun like a biotch as if i started off in 2nd... but i got some mods i just did Quote

If you were running high compression and advanced timing, then you would need it. But it sounds like you have basic mods. Also you will be running at 4000 feet, that will lower your compression some more. You might end up dropping down one main jet since you are going from 1k to 4k. you will just have to see how she sounds and feels! have fun Quote
bansheeryder_69 Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 i was talking to a guy at the local dealership and asked him about advancing the timing and he told me thats just a way to burn the shee down faster \ What do you guys think? Quote

05bansh Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 (edited) Peoeple who work at stealerships dont know what the hell they are talking about. I have heard so much bs from one of my local stealerships I dont trust anything they say. When I bought my shee one of the guys told me not to run pod filters ever or I will fry my engine. What a dipshit! I only trust a few of the local machine shops here, NO Stealerships! Leave your +4 timing, you are not going to hurt anything with +4. Edited May 23, 2005 by 05bansh Quote

sj820 Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 Thats bull, you can advance or retard your timing all you want! You are just giving up top or bottem end respectively! I have known people that ride for hours straight that have advanced their timing and their motors didn't shit to bed! Stupid dealership people act like they know everything becasue they work in a cycle joint but Quote
dajogejr Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 Agreed....I trail rode all day long a few weekends ago, +4 timing, and I'm not going to change it. And that's on a stock, original 96 shee motor. OEM pistons, everything... Now...if you started going +8 or 10...then...you might have some issues... Quote
slowpokebanshee Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 I am +10 w/.030" off the head and lightened flywheel, also K&n Filters (clamp on) w/toomey t-5 pipes and 300 main jets and 27.5 pilots at sea level on pump gas.... it does ping a little on china wall (Glamis) but Ocatne Boost takes care of it. I also pull 15-41 gears... Don't be afraid to add compression/timing...Banshees love it. Quote
dajogejr Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Yeah baby...good to hear. If you're gonna go that much bump and timing, it'd be a good idea into having the crank trued and welded...for reliability. Other than that....squeeze that premix baby!! Quote
bansheeryder_69 Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 I had my head milled pod filters 35's on the way I already run amsoil dominator with 1 gallon 110 sunoco to 4 gallons 91, I was thinking about getting an adjustable timing plate off of ebay. What should I do then? Quote

Animalman294 Posted May 25, 2005 Author Report Posted May 25, 2005 I ordered mine from Ricky Stator and it was here two days later. It was $35.00 plus S & H, and yes I noticed the difference. I will have to check the plug, but I think I am going to leave it alone. I wanted to also install the new reeds and head, but with all the rest of the things I need to do before this weekend, I decided against it. I even thought about just putting the new head, because then I won't have to rejet. But with Murphy as my shadow friend, I think what ever can go wrong will and with only two days left before we go I don't want to risk not having my bike because I am waiting on a Stealer only item. .
