quick-z Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Thinking of honing my cylinders myself. Is there a special type of hone to use? Or can I just go to an aotoparts store and pick one up and it will be fine Quote
Stinger Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 There are basically 3 types of hones: 1) Ball Hone 2) Spring Hone 3) Rigid Hone #1 won't work for 2 strokes, #2 will work fine for a light hone and is what the parts store will have. #3 is what machine shops and such use to ensure the bore is straight when it's honed. In other words, you should be fine doing it yourself, just make sure you spray some liquid in the bores to clean out the material as you grind it away and make sure you move up and down to get the hatches to cross at an angle of about 30 degrees. 89Steeda Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 OK, I want to see someone use #2, a spring hone on a Banshee cylinder. You'll be catching ports left and right. Probablly wipe out the hone and cylinder. #1 for me. Quote
holeshotkid Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I've used a spring hone before and never had a problem catching the ports. How short of stones were you planning on using? Quote

Stinger Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I've used a rigid hone and a spring hone. The spring hone worked great with stones that were ~3" long. I've tried a ball hone and the balls kept trying to destroy the ports. Quote
fastbanshee4u Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I belive mst atv shops use the ball hone, just need the right size.I personally use a spring hone with 3 inch fine stones. Quote
