MILO Posted April 22, 2005 Report Posted April 22, 2005 i had a german shepherd (female) for 11 years, died this spring. just picked up a male shepherd pup last week. 6 wks old and already 9.3 lbs, he's gonna be a biggin like his father, which was a little over 130lbs. no pics to post yet though. shepherds are great very loyal, good with the family, great guard dog, and yep, a great best friend. i love having a dog around for all of these things. i'd like to get a beagle yet though to have a hunting dog too. hopefully for the upcoming season!! LegendSS28 Posted April 23, 2005 Report Posted April 23, 2005 nice lookin pup..looks a little bit like my old pitbull/sharpei mix that we had to put down after 11 great years...man i still miss him just as much as the day he died...nice friendly dog, but let me tell you, killed about every rabbit in the neighborhood, 1 other dog, and an enormous raccoon that tried to eat his food but anyway, good luck with your new family member, im sure youll be more than happy with him Quote
01bansheeke Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 staffordshire and a pitt are pretty much the same dog. I've got close to a 100lb female pit. SHEs a little over 95. Sweetest dog known to man. Playful, loves to run etc. When i go out of town, she doesn't eat, doesn't sleep etc. She goes into her kennel and waits for me to get home. Its amazing how loyal these dogs are to there owners. Thats a nice lookin dog, somethin to be proud of for sure! Quote

01bansheeke Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 you HAVE to watch those pups. You know when they want to pee or shit. they will look around and if you punish the pup ever, they will probably try and do it where you can't see them. Best thing to do, is catch them doing it, or about to, then pick them up and take them outside. Eventually they will learn that outside is where you shit. even giving them a treat or something isn't a bad idea. I'm sure there are plenty of ways to do it. Make sure you don't punish him if you don't catch him taking a shit on your new carpet lol. If you see the shit, its too late. But if you catch him doing it, punish him, then pick him up and take him outside..even mid-shit lol. If you punish him after the fact, he will have no idea what he did and think you are just punishing him for the hell of it. Quote
LegendSS28 Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 to help potty train him, you can take him out on a leash every 2 hours or so(prewtty frequently i know) and bring him to one spot where you wwould like him to go...don't worry most dogs are like this, hell get trained Quote
01bansheeke Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 another thing a dog trainer told me is to keep in mind, that a pup can only hold it back for 30 minutes to every month he is old. So one month means he can hold it for 30 min etc. Quote
Cotton eyed Joe Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 another thing a dog trainer told me is to keep in mind, that a pup can only hold it back for 30 minutes to every month he is old. So one month means he can hold it for 30 min etc. 359890[/snapback] We were told by our trainer (I'm sure they all have their opinions) that a puppy literally has no control over their bowels. Its almost as if they don't know what needing to take a shit even is, so they just hunker down and shit. We still at 5 months take our dog out immediately after eating. Typically you can get them into a rhythm of eating then shitting. Every single accident we had in the house (4 total) was because I wasn't paying attention or forgot to take her out right after she ate. Also, right after they take a dump, love the hell out of them. Pet them and praise them like they just saved your life. Eventually they will get the hint. Quote

MILO Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 housetraining is frustrating. my best advice... buy a carpet scrubber thank God we have one or my wife would put the dog and me both outside for good. but i agree, you have to watch them constantly, they are a baby after all. as soon as my pup eats or drinks a lot, we go outside. if he sleeps for a long time, as soon as he gets up, we go outside. when he takes care of business, he gets loved up, maybe even a treat, and back inside right away, so he knows what going out is for. my wife is fed up with it when i'm at work and she has to take care of him, so he spends some time outside tied at his box also. i think he's gonna be an inside/outside dog, depending on whose home at the time when we go to bed, he's in his pen. they usually don't shit or piss where they sleep, unless they can't wait any longer. patience and persistance is the key to any training. other than housetraining, short repetitive sessions is best. spending an hour trying to teach a dog to sit will just bore him, with poor results. and you must be consistent with your commands or motions to avoid confusion. you can't say 'come' one day, then c'mon, c'mon boy, let's go, over here, whatever, and expect them to learn to respond on command. good luck. Its like you are talking to a retarded neighbor. Quote
broke Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 I agree on the carpet cleaner. We never even put ours away when are dog was a pup. It actually got used so often the carpet started to pull apart at the seams. And then just when you think they have it, they wake up retarded one day and forget everything you tought them over the last six months. But give it a little time and it all clicks. Now my horse cries at the door when she needs to go out and beats her "big" paws on it when she wants to come in. And after it was all said and done, all new carpeting. Quote
