I was going to get a set of toomey t-5's for my stock bike, then i was convinced on CPI's. But now it looks like I am going with the Rocket pipes. Has anyone ran them and compared them to stock pipes on a stock bike or compared them to T-5's on a stock bike?

My main question is the chrome quality of the rocket pipes. Should i order them in chrome or should i order them bare and get a chrome shop to dip them?

I bought one of the sets when they first came out and the chrome was horrible, flaked at every weld point and rusted. Tom replaced my set with no questions and the new ones still look like the day I got them. The chrome is perfect and seems to be a great job.

I would just order them chrome from the start unless it will be a show bike and you need the absolute best chrome job known to man.

I'm sure if there is ever a problem, Ray would take care of it as well as Tom did.

definately its show quality chrome

itd triple plated, that mean its buffed first, then nickle plated, then zinc plated, then chrome plated. I'm pretty sure those are the correct metals, I cant remember what they told me a few years back when we first started, but it really looks good!

I bought my set almost a year ago, I think May of 04. I have recently had some chrome starting to flake off at the welds, mostly near the head pipe which isn't very visible, but a couple chips on top in a visible area recently. I clean them with polished mag cleaner after every ride and shee lives in my garage so the chip spots haven't been able to rust, but after 3 days of riding at the coast they were noticeably starting to rust. The areas away from the weld have remained perfect (other than a few small imperfections there when I got them) and I haven't had any blueing near the head pipe which is surprising. The actual pipes (rockets) themselves seem to run pretty cool surface temps compared to my FMFs.

If you have a GOOD chromer locally that does it for a good price I might go that way, otherwise buy them chromed. I think the newer chrome rockets are better than a year ago. I'm pretty sure mine weren't tripple chrome plated, just one layer of chrome unless all three layers are chipping off at once on the welds.

T-5s seem to blue at the headpipes prety bad. CPI quality is very good from what I have seen.

On steel its copper (to fill in any imperfections) nickel, then a very very very very thin layer of chrome.

On aluminum its zinc (to remove the fine layer of ALO2 and give a virgin surface for the copper to stick to) then the copper eats the zinc off and plates the aluminum then the same process as steel.

I have been thinking of some rockets but was wondering will I rub and melt my boots against them like I do my fatty's. This has basically destroyed the appearence of my pipes over time. Or are they kind of out of the way?

Yeah, I know you're not Ray. I thought most everything went through Ray as the distributor. I know you produce the pipes, and names are always good to know when you actually meet someone face to face.

I just went though Tom at the time, I don't think Ray was selling them the way he is now.

Keep up the good work, all involved.

yeah I do all the making, getting them chromed all that. SO to have them fixed you would end up referred to me anyway.

Or I may pass off a dent job on Tom here and there because he is a damn nice guy to work with and any questions I had or parts I needed he had me pointed right in the direction I needed to go.
