littletroll Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I am planning on buying some pro x pistons that will either be stock or .10 over, i was wanting to know what everyone thinks of these vs a wiseco kit. I have the basic set up (pipes, 2 into 1 k&n filter advanced timing plate, getting my stock reeds modified and will be getting a cool head in the near future) thanks Quote
CowboyBanshee Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 isnt wiseco really the only piston? i mean really, why even bother with others. Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 ran pro junk in my bros old banshee and that fucker lost compression quick. maybe their rings just suck who knows. switch to wiseco and no problem. ill never run anything but wiseco again. Quote
littletroll Posted March 29, 2005 Author Report Posted March 29, 2005 From what i understand, the cast pistons are more durable except you can't put nos or alchohol to them Quote
CowboyBanshee Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 no no hell no....forged slugs are always stonger, even I hyperutenic..or however its spelled, isnt as strong, when a forged piston fails, it plastics a bit and melts, when a cast breaks..the shatter usually, the are never gonna be as light or strong... BigRed350x Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I've had wiseco's forged pistons shatter & break. Had a crapload of tiny pieces of shit in my crank & it took a long time before that shee was running again. Quote
CowboyBanshee Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I didnt say it was impossible, but usually, especially a detonation caused failure...idk, always been my experience, i mean, i have seen shattered forges, but usually if everything is right, your wall clearance and that... Quote
Nightrider Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Pro-x pistons are actually made by ART,the same company that makes pistons for the Yamaha factory. If your looking for a stock replacement,Pro-x is it.Wiseco will handle more abuse, like beating the shit out of it when its cold, running too lean or detonation. If this sounds like you, then wisco is your piston,IMO I would only use Wiseco in extreme engines.Otherwise there overkill. theeechozen1 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I like Pro-X, they are a nice OEM style replacement piston, they do not expand like a forged piston, this CAN extend bore life. The pistons that got me 20,000 miles on my RZ350 were not Wiesco Quote
NYUK Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 i ve had pro x crack in half an hour out of the box.and an l.a. sleeve shatter in 1,000 pieces.never had that problem with wiseco. Quote
RNBRAD Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I say if at all possible use pro-x or oem pistons. If your running big ponies, nitrous etc, then use wiseco's. They are both excellent pistons but I would never run forged unless the motor absolutely required it. Same thing car manufacturer's do also. Dodge switched to cast pistons in their viper a few years back and I believe gained horspower, the new corvette C6 uses cast pistons, Porche uses cast pistons. Why? If the engine can run a cast piston it will run more efficiently, run quieter and be more reliable. Quote
BdBanshee Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 I have had good luck with both types of pistons, using Wiseco now in both Banshees though. Quote
spoin39 Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 I have used ProX for years, never had a problem. Most factory 2 stroke racers use them, so they must be good. I haven't had a problem with the wiseco's, just prefer the ProX. Quote
babsheerider Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 take off the head and examine the cylinder. if there is nothing wrong and you are still getting good compression then put the head back on and leave it alone. spend the money on the trip in MAY. Quote
